It is on the banks of Dolphin Bay and had an economy that relies heavily on tourism. The first people to live in what is now West Melbourne were Creek Indians who settled there around 1835. They traded with the Spanish and Portuguese people who lived near by. In 1845, the federal government built a road from St Petersburg through what is now Miami to Key Biscayne so goods could be transported more easily between these two towns. This road led to many new settlers coming to this area because it was accessible by land and water as well as being close to great warehouses where goods could be stored before being shipped off to other parts of the world. One of these early settlers was James Eastman who came from New Hampshire in 1848 and homesteaded on land which he purchased along with his wife Lydia and their four children: James A., Julia C., George H., and Olive Maud). He named his farm "Eastman's Grove" after himself and his brother John Eastman (1792-1868), also from NH. Another early settler in this area was Captain John Fenton (1795-1871) who built a fort on the current site of West Melbourne Naval Station during the Mexican–American War Period in order to protect American shipping lanes near Key Biscayne Bay against Spanish Pirates. This fort served as a military outpost until 1898 when it was destroyed by a hurricane that struck Tampa Bay! In 1900, Edwin Waco bought 2,500 acres east of present day West Melbourne for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest payable every year! This purchase made Waco one of America's first farmers! He started cultivating crops such as cotton, corn, peas, potatoes etc., but soon realized that this land would not provide enough revenue to support him financially so he sold most of it back home in Cuba for sugar cane planting!!! After years of hard work building up this large acreage into some valuable farmland Waco finally achieved eternal happiness when he married Anna Maria de la Concepción y Pardo (born March 17th 1899 - died December 3rd 1984)!! The wedding took place at Saint Ignatius Catholic Church just east off I-10 near Gulfport where they raised 5 daughters together: Margarita Estrada (1924-2002), Olga Lopez Martinez (1928-1999), Lourdes Rodriguez de la Cruz (1932-2006), Irma Margarita Ramos y Ramos (1936-) Anna Maria played an important role not only as wife but also mother hen leading her daughters into adulthood while she looked after them herself until their deaths; energy both physical and spiritual which will always remain missing from our lives! They are buried together at Roselle Lawn Cemetery next door to their husbands James A., Julia C., George H., & Olive Maud....... final resting place for those dear departed sisters... However, cattle are still an important part of the local economy and ranchers continue to produce feed for pigs and other animals. Today, West Melbourne is home to a diverse population made up of both Hispanic/Latino residents who descended from Spaniards who settled in this area in the 16th century as well as African Americans who have arrived over time. The community is also home to several small businesses that support local commerce while providing jobs for locals and people living near by
