West Melbourne is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. West Melbourne is bordered by Kendall on the north and east, Doral on the south and west, and Biscayne Bay to the south and east. The area now known as West Melbourne was first settled by Native Americans in this region during the early 17th century. On November 1, 1837, Jacksonville Township organized as Fort Myers Township after purchasing from Santa Clara de la Florida 2 square miles (0.8 km2) of land between Cutler Creek on the northwest corner of what would later become North Miami Beach and Biscayne Boulevard on its southeast corner. Jacksonville Township's boundaries were amended to include all of present-day Miami-Dade County on December 4, 1907 when it became a city through an act of Congress which designated Miami Beach as its municipal center. In 1886, John Ladd opened his sawmill here that still operates today; it has been there since 1887 when Ladd partnered with Gustavus Kapp to build what would become one of South Florida's largest lumber mills - processing over 350 acres (121 hectares) per day at its peak in 1908). In addition to lumbering activity from Ladd's mill, other local businesses began prospering such as Jardine & Hastings Furniture Company which built their flagship store near Northwest First Street and Third Avenue in 1911; Armourblanket Company founded here in 1916; Hialeah Brewing Companys setting up shop here in 1922 before moving downtown; Home Depot stores opening up around this time across town including one right next door to Ladd's old mill - now called The Mill - becoming landmarks along Northwest First Street like "Homespun America". In 1870, the townsite changed hands several times until it passed to Hillsborough County for Development purposes in 1876-77 under provisions made by then-Governor John Cordero as part of his plan to promote white settlement along Tampa Bay's eastern seaboard. In 1911, when Hillsborough County established Pinellas County within it, West Melbourne became one of its original county seats. The following year saw the opening of what is now known as Foley Park with baseball diamonds for both local high school teams and a municipal park that served as an open space for public demonstrations and events such as fairs and carnivals (the first event held there took place on July 6th). In 1915, construction began on what would become West Melbourne Stadium which hosted games throughout World War I before being replaced by Miamis Stadium in 1925 after that war ended; this stadium still hosts occasional football games today (though their use has been deprecated). The post-war years were tough for many small towns across Florida; however, due to heavy immigration from Mexico during those years (particularly during the early 1960s), West Melbourne flourished like few others did during that time period; eventually becoming home to over 10 thousand residents by 1970 census results alone!
