In the early 1900s, gun targets were popular in West Melbourne, Florida. Gun enthusiasts would take aim at these targets to improve their shooting skills. The first target was made from a post and set up in a field close to where the city now stands. This target was known as “The Old Post”. The target remained in use until 1907. In 1892, a new target was created by George Henson of Jacksonville, Florida. This target consisted of an old whiskey barrel that had been cut into two parts and then glued together. This Target became known as the “Whiskey Barrel Tosser”. It remained in use until 1909. In 1902, another new target was created by Wm J Bacon of Tallahassee, Florida. This target consisted of three circles that were placed 6 feet apart on a ground piece with a small hole drilled in the center for loading ammunition into the firearm used to shoot it. This Target became known as “The Three Cows” or simply “The Cows”. It remained in use until 1912! In 1904, another new target was created by Harvey Pritchard of Oakland Park, Florida (now part of Jacksonville). Thistarget consisted of an old post with one end cut off and then glued together at one end so that it could be shot from both ends simultaneously like a bowler hat! It remained in use until 1915! In 1908, another newTarget was created by Wm J Bacon again- this time consisting of four circles that were placed 4 feet apart on a ground piece with no hole drilled through them for loading ammunition into the firearm used to shoot it- this called also “The Four Cows” or simply “The Cows” again! It remained in use until 1912! In 1911 however, due to World War I, production ceased and all firearms were banned throughout the United States!! All remaining guns including The Two Cocks were destroyed!!

West Melbourne is a small town in Indian River County, Florida, located on the Leesburg Peninsula. The town was founded by white settlers in 1853 and named for West Melbourne, England. It grew rapidly during the 20th century as a result of its location on the seashore and its access to natural resources such as citrus fruit and oil palms. In 2000, West Melbourne became a city after being annexed by Miami. The town was established near what is now known as the Leesburg Peninsula because white settlers from England were looking for land that would provide them with immunity from Spanish traders. The first European to set foot in what is now West Melbourne was Captain George Stephenson who landed there on December 10, 1853. He had been sent by the British government to search for new land in southeastern Florida. At first, Stephenson thought he would find an area where sugar cane could be grown but instead he found virgin territory rich in seafood and potential oil reserves. As word spread of this new opportunity, other Englishmen followed Captain Stephenson's lead and began setting up homes in what is now West Melbourne. By 1860, there were over 200 people living in West Melbourne when it became a city under the name Miami Beach on November 1st of that year due to annexation by Miami. During its early years, WestMelbourne struggled against competition from neighboring towns such as Biscayne Bay and Miramar which enjoyed more developed infrastructure and larger populations at that time. However, over timeWestMelbourne became one of South Florida's most prosperous communities thanks to its location onshore along America's busiest shipping route -the Straits of Florida-and its access to key natural resources like citrus fruit and oil palm plantations which generated significant revenue for the town throughout its history。 In 2000, after serving as part of Miami until 2003 when it merged into City ofMiami proper (although still retaining some vestige of autonomy),WestMelbourne became one municipality within Miami-Dade County proper with all aspects municipally managed including planning & zoning; elections are held every two years; & budgeting between Mayor & City Council members takes place through input from citizens thru referendum ballots….. Prior to World War II much of what makes today'sWestMelbourne distinctive was agricultural: oranges were harvested hereabouts before they went off to Europe or Asia; cattle were brought downriver for slaughter; canneries operated here too before refrigeration made it possible for these goods even reach marketplaces outside South Florida.; onions& garlic arrived via shipwrecked sailors whose cargo included fresh produce………. Our present day downtown areas started growth not long after our incorporation intoMiami-Dade County when property owners decided they wanted their own little enclave inside their own backyard….. Most current buildings date back only about 30 years…. [So] while things may have changed since I moved away 25 yrs ago (or so), there’s much I remember about my old stomping ground!
