It was located on the east side of the Everglades and bordered to the north by Dadeland Park and to the south by Hollywood Hills. The population of West Melbourne was 5,500 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1896 as a result of an amalgamation of two small communities: Belle Glade and West Miami. Belle Glade had been established in 1892 as a Spanish Settlement and West Miami, which had been founded in 1885. Both settlements were originally called "Nassau" after Prince Ferdinand, Duke of Nassau who had donated land for their establishment. In 1896, when Belle Glade became part ofMiami-Dade County, it merged with West Miami to form what is now known as West Melbourne. The name came from Indian Chief Montezuma's village ("Mulatto Village") in present day Belle Glade because that is where both villages were located before they were merged into one community. The first store opened in West Melbourne on October 12th 1898 by Wm Halsey & Bros., general merchants and dry goods dealers from New York City. At that time there were only two homes in the town - ones belonging to Mr. Ayer (the first postmaster) and his wife Mrs Cushing (the first female postmistress). There were no schools until 1916 when Dr Prentice began teaching children grades 1-6 at his home until 1922when he moved to Coral Gables Elementary School which continued until 1962 when it closed due to budget cuts By 1923 all elementary students except those living near State Road 7 had moved out ofWest Melbourne leaving just students living near State Road 7 between 1920-1922 In 1932 Cuban refugees started arriving here seeking asylum but many did not have legal status so they roamed around looking for food and shelter before finally settling down permanently within 3 months while some others relocated back home When World War II started there wereapproximately sixty people living here full time or working part time off state road 7 but within 2 years most everyone left for various reasons including service during WWII military training camps along I-95 west of Fort Myers then Ft Myers Naval Air Station Then Ft Myers Naval Shipyard These places eventually closed also annexed by Dadeland Park
