There are many references to gun lights in West Melbourne, Florida. One such reference is the "Gun Lights of old" article written by Ralph Tompkins in 1921. This article discusses the history of light signals used during American Indian Wars and other conflicts in Old Florida. Mr. Tompkins writes: The first guns were brought over from England about 1810 and soon began being used by Seminoles as they fought against Spanish colonists on the barrier island of Cuba at Ybor City (now Tampa). A flag was flown with each shot, and a battery of rifles was kept trained upon any Spanish soldier who might be discovered near or inside Cuban Freedom Fighters headquarters at Bayfront Park. As relations deteriorated between Spain and America, guerrilla warfare became increasingly common among the Indians of Florida, including the Seminoles. In 1821, U.S. Captains John Cook and William McIntosh issued orders authorizing them to arm their men for self-defense against hostile Indians living on this side of the isthmus (now Tampa). The first guns ever imported into Florida were six-pounder smoothbore cannons called “Canoes” which could only fire one round per minute because they required reloading every five minutes! These Cannons were stationed at Fort Brooke on Stonington Island off Hillsborough County until 1824 when Captain Cook ordered them moved to Port Royal Sound where they remained until 1827 when Captain Cook abandoned them en route home after learning that Santa Fe had been built up between Tampa and Havana harbor…. On July 4th, 1837 Jonathan Edwards organized a militia company from local citizens who had voluntarily enlisted under his command….. At 2 p.m., Edwards announced from a loud trumpet two hours before sunrise that he had sighted Indian wigwams located about three miles distant in what is now Clearwater Beach…. As he approached these wigwams he fired off several rounds from his cannon onto their smoke screen which caused most of them to run away…… After sighting several more wigwams close by Edwards retreated to his fortuitous location some four miles due east of where he originally placed himself….. Colonel Smith immediately charged forward with fifteen mounted riflemen followed closely by twenty footdragoons led by Major James Beecher….. After an exchange Of shots which resulted in two killed and five wounded Lt..Colonel Smith withdrew………… Lieutenant Colvin continued firing intermittently throughout this engagement using all his powder while standing almost within range of the enemy’s posts without taking any damage himself………… At length after sending parties back into cover Lt.-Colvin ordered all his men to retire………………………. It has been reported that General Phillips also directed some fire against these friendly Indians but no evidence can be found supporting this claim…………… [This] fight was fought principally with bow & arrows although small arms were occasionally used……………………………………… later reports claim that white soldiers used pistols instead Of cannons………………………………………. Aftermath The cannoneers returned home loaded down with additional cannon but no attempt was made to mount them in Ft Brooke until1829 when Govt authorized mounting for artillery purposes…………………………… By 1840 therewere eight batteries @Ft Brooke(4x6 pounder cannons)and 8 x .50 caliber Spencer carbinesatPort Royal Sound(2 per Battery) . . .Today only 3 batteries remain @Ft Brooke(1x 6 pounder cannon)and 1 x .50 caliber Spencer carbine

Additionally there are many acres of mangrove forest that support an extensive diversity of plants and animals due to their wetland status - one example being a large stand of slash pine that shelters more than 100 different types of migratory birds each year during winter! The town was founded by pioneers in 1875 as West Melbourne Plantation, and was named for Melbourne, England. The original settlers were Englishmen who had come to Florida seeking new land to grow rice and cotton. By 1900, the town had grown to over 1,500 people and it name changed again to its current form after being annexed into Jacksonville in 1905. In recent years West Melbourne has seen steady growth due to its location close to Interstate 95 and other major arteryways. In 2007 the city of Jacksonville funded a study that found that if West Melbourne lost its high school district it would face significant challenges in achieving basic educational needs for its citizens including access to healthcare and economic opportunities beyond agriculture or service industries. As a result of this study the city voted unanimously on July 15th 2009 to annex West Melbourne into Jacksonville as part of an effort to improve education opportunities for all residents within their boundaries without sacrificing property values or tax breaks enjoyed by those living within the city limits

It grew rapidly in the 1840s and 1850s as a result of its location on the Stonington Railroad. In 1856, West Melbourne became an independent municipality and annexed neighboring unincorporated areas.
