Wiley hadoriginally come to the area from Illinois and was looking for a place to farm and shoot game. The first shooting range in West Melbourne was open from 1885-1887. In 1889, Wiley built his own ranch and used it as a hunting ground for white deer, raccoons, hogs, and other animals. One of the things that Wiley did to improve his hunting experience was to build a firing range on his property. This range became famous throughout Florida due to its tight tolerances for accuracy. In 1912, George H. Wiley passed away and bequeathed his rifles and shotguns to the state of Florida (now known as the United States). The state Museum in Tallahassee has an extensive collection of firearms which includes over 60 handguns dating back to 1881!

The history of West Melbourne, Florida dates back to the early 1800s. The area was initially inhabited by Seminole Indians, who were forced out of their lands in the area by white settlers. In 1821, a group of Englishmen named Swampy and John Williamson founded a small town on the west side of Tampa Bay called Floridasville. The town was quickly abandoned due to its location next to an active volcano and lack of resources. However, swampy and Williamson continued to operate a small store and tavern in Floridasville until they died in 1827. After their deaths, their son-in-law, James Wilkinson took over the business and operated it until 1850. In that year, Wilkinson sold his interest in the business to John Prentice Jr., who ran it until 1861. From 1861-1868, Prentice Sr.'s son John Prentice Jr. operated the business as Jepson's Store before it was taken over by his brother George Prentice in 1875. In 1892, GeorgePrentice donated land for what would become West Melbourne High School; however, construction did not begin until 1898 because of World War II requirements for military housing developments near Tampa Bay Naval Base. The school opened on September 25th, 1948!
