A few years later, an Englishman named Amos Stirling developed a more powerful eyepiece that allowed users to view targets up to 100 yards away from their eyes using binoculars. In 1861, Italian scientist Giovanni Battista Viola created the first true telescope with a objective lens that would allow users to see individual stars at a distance of about 60 miles! Soon after this invention, binocular technology advanced enormously! With advances in manufacturing methods and materials such as plastic and metal (the most common type today), along with advances in optics design (such as variable focus)binocular performance has continually improved over the years. West Melbourne, Florida is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The community was founded by Englishman George Stephenson in 1824 as West Melbourne on an tract of land grant from Spanish governor Manuel de la Vega to his friend and business partner James McMillan. A post office called West Melbourne was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1931. In 1907, a railroad line was extended through what is now West Melbourne fromMiami to Fort Lauderdale; this made the area more accessible for people who lived near either city center or airports. The first shopping center opened in West Melbourne in 1951, followed by several more over the years. The current shopping mall complex opened its doors on July 1, 1999. One of the early businesses that operated inWestMelbournewastheCotton Exchange which became an anchor tenant at one point within what is now home of Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears Roebuck and Co.). In 1922 a small grocery store opened along with two other stores when two brothers named Harry and Sam Hirsch started their own grocers business out of their garage next door to their house on NW 2nd St.. This small grocery store would become known as 'The Hirsch Store'. In 1928 they added another store - The Wagon Wheel - just east of KFC across I-95 from downtown Miami proper!SamuelHirsch passed away suddenly while still running his Grocery Store leaving behind him 3 children plus his widow Vera who ran theStore until her death in 1974 also leaving behind her 4 children!During World War II many citizens volunteered with local factories manufacturing munitions such as planes, tanks and artillery etc... during that time there were multiple warehouses located throughout town including: Biscayne Bay Arsenal produced anti aircraft missiles(this particular production ended about 1945 when Post Office closed), Signal Corps constructed listening posts all around town(most notably Northwestern Hill overlooking downtown) USAAF put up Hangar #2 just northwest of town for use by Japanese pilots during WWII .........
