During much of the 20th century, West Melbourne was known for its annual carnival - one of which took place every year from 1947 through 1962 - as well as its role as a center for citrus production throughout much of that decade (the event now takes place in May). However, following the war's end, Kendallville-WestMelbourne regained much of its former glory with new businesses being opened up such as a grocery store that became one of Jacksonville's largest employers; an amusement park that became one of Miami's biggest tourist attractions; and several high-rise buildings that remain today among North Florida's most popular tourist destinations. Today, Kendallville-WestMelbourne is home to several large shopping malls along with many small businesses making it an attractive place to live and work.
West Melbourne was founded by Captain James Cook in 1768. It became part of the United States of America after its independence from Great Britain in 1776. The village was renamed Melbourne in 1833 and it incorporated as a city on December 12, 1836.
