In 1902–03 an effort was made to build a railway through Wellington but no progress was made until 1916 when construction began on what would become the Jacksonville-Monroe line which ran through town centre. The railway proved successful and by 1930 Wellington had become an important commercial center with many businesses located along it including banks, hotels/motels and theaters as well as several agricultural enterprises such as citrus groves and poultry farms. During World War II much of Wellington's infrastructure such as roads, water supplies and telephone lines were destroyed or damaged by bombing raids during the war; however most all original structures remain intact today including the Post Office (1930), US Army barracks (1946), Masonic Lodge (1887), Methodist Church (1898) and Wellesley School District No 710 building which housed both public schools until its closure in 1976 after serving students from grades PreK-12th grade until 2006 when it became part of Flagler Beach Middle School; also remaining are two blocks of buildings on Main Street which served as stores before becoming residences starting in 1946 until they were torn down around 1990s due to code enforcement changes introduced after consolidation across south Florida caused many stores open late into night without permits from local officials).
