On Dec. 14, 1855, Wellington was founded by citizens of Jacksonville, Fla., in honor of George Washington and his wife Martha. On Febuary 15, 1928, a tornado touched down in Wellington and destroyed much of the town center including both Carnegie libraries as well as several homes and businesses.
