The area was part of the Creek Nation and many Seminole natives died during the American Civil War. In 1868, Jacksonville became the county seat of Duval County and Wellington was created within it. The town started to grow slowly until World War I when a large amount of military personnel and their families moved to Wellington. After the war, Wellington began to grow rapidly due to its location on Highway 90 and its access to phosphate mining operations. Today, Wellington is a small town with a population of around 5,000 people who are mostly retirees or students from nearby colleges.

Wellington is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is one of the most-populous cities in that area. Wellington began as a small post office called Wellesley on February 14, 1892. In 1918 there were only 5 residents living in Wellington and it had a population of just over 100 people. By 1930 it had grown to over 200 people and by 1940 it had reached 300 people. At this point the city became an important center for cotton farming with many homes being built around plantations that still exist today including Plantation No: 4761C & M (now owned by IBM), Plantation No.: 4803B & R (now owned by Tyson Foods), Plantation No.: 4810D (now owned by Litton Industries) and Plantation No.: 4862B (now owned by PNC Financial Services). Despite its importance to agriculture, the city also experienced significant growth during World War II with numerous businesses opening up to serve American soldiers stationed here including General Motors Corporation Headquarters which opened on July 1st 1944; Allied Rubber Company which manufactured rubber boots for troops; Brown Paper Bag Company which made paper bags for soldiers; Radio Corporation of America Headquarters where antennas were installed for use during World War II; First National Bank - now Wells Fargo - where Texaco gas stations were established across from Fort Myers Beach Boulevard Mall; Boeing Missile plant - now Lockheed Martin - which produced B-17 Flying Fortress bombers for USAAF service; Servicemen's Home Administration Building - now Veterans Affairs Medical Center - which housed various civilian services such as food stamps and welfare assistance while military units remained operational nearby such as Aviation Battalion #1 whose members operated two fighter airfields within walking distance ofMayor's Office building while other operations took place at nearby munitions production plants or naval shipyards

Wellington is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,880 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Gainesville–Lakeland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wellington was founded in 1892 by veteran American soldiers and settlers. The first post office opened in 1893. In 1912, the town became a city and was named after George Washington Wellington, 1st Baron Wellington of Rannoch Castle in Scotland. The name comes from an English estate near Granada that had been abandoned for years because of lack of waterpower; when someone discovered an underground well there, they christened the locality "Wellington." In 1980, Wellington became part of the new City of Gainesville full time and retains its original name as a separate municipality within Gainesville proper known as Wellington-Gainesville Municipal District #1. On October 15th 1984 Mayor Leroy Lathan announced plans to change the name back to Wellington due to objections from some residents who felt it would be too similar to neighboring cities such as Ocala and Tallahassee which have their own namesakes (e.g., Sanford). After much public outcry and protest from residents who felt they were being forced to change their names without consulting them or giving them an opportunity to vote on whether or not they wanted to retain their separate identities, Mayor Lathan's decision was revoked by a vote of 7-2 with one abstainer. With no other choice but to return to Wellington's original name after months of protests and pressure from citizens who saw this decision as unconstitutional (and against allTownhall principles), Mayor Lathan signs a proclamation returning the town back under its original name on November 3rd 1984 before quashing any further complaints about his decision two weeks later during a press conference at City Hall where he formally announced that "the people" had won and that "the new Townhall government" would restore order following what he termed "a very heated debate." The city has experienced many changes since then including annexations by Osceola County in 1992 followed by Seminole County in 2006; both made up largely of rural areas outside of town limits which removed most if not all likely future business or residential development opportunities for those within town limits (the last annexation happened only three years ago when Lakeland annexed parts of west Polk county making it even harder for businesses within town boundaries). However over time more than just retail developments have sprung up within walls communities such as Beechmont Estates developedMagnolia Terrace apartments complex downtown while Pinecrest Farms homebuilder Gregory Homes has built several high-end homes located just off State Road 821 east side near Interstate 495) On January 14th 2009 representatives from various community groups met with mayors Lenoir City Manager Tim Whitehead & Assistant Managers Scott Sayre & Rebekah Slaton regarding proposed actions needed in order for planned redevelopment projects called Turtle Creek Village Shopping Center Phase III which includes anchor store Regal Cinema across I-4 exit 91A southbound lanes adjacent US 98W inside lot owned by Payless Shoes -Phase II also includes 2 large parking lots totaling 163 stalls along with associated infrastructure between I-4 Exit 91A southbound lanes adjacent US 98W inside lot owned by Payless Shoes -Phase II still needs approvals from various governmental agencies before any construction can begin
