When World War I began, General James Sayers III enlisted as an artillery officer with the 5th Ulysses S Grant’s Division at Camp Polk near Savannah Georgia but he was wounded on November 12th 1918 and sent home soon after due to health problems related thereto After the war ended however, he rejoined his unit and served heroically through many campaigns including World War II as Commanding Officer 2nd Battalion 1st Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division during The Korean War For many years thereafter GeneralJamesSayersIII resided permanently in Wellington with his wife until their deaths there on May 25th 1974 and October 20th 1978 respectively On December 1st 1942 local merchant Harry Jaffe opened Jaffe’s Department Store at 425 E Main Street which became one of the most important commercial centers in town having been founded by Harry Jaffe himself less than one year earlier With over 100 employees at its peak it functioned like a giant department store providing products not only from Florida but also from Texas, Arizona and other states across America In 1958 when Interstate 10 was built through central Wellington we had access to all kinds of fresh produce coming into our town from outlying counties so Jaffe’s continued operation along with other local businesses helped support growth within our community over those years

Wellington is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1851 by Captain Richard Wellesley and his family. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. The Wellington post office closed in 1978 and reopened as the Gainesville post office. The first white settler in Wellington was Captain Richard Wellesley, who arrived with his family on horseback from England in 1851. He built a log cabin near the present day intersection of US-1 and US-4 on what is now patent land which he called "Wellington." In 1865, when Confederate General James Kenedy occupied Jacksonville for three months during the American Civil War, he visited Wellington while en route to south Florida; upon his return to Jacksonville he ordered Captain Wellesley's store to be burned because it supported Union propaganda! After the war ended, Captain Wellesley resumed business activity but sold his interest in 1865 to Jno Wessner of Gainesville. In 1880, Drifting Sands Lumber Company built a sawmill on Clearwater River north of town; this mill became one of the largest lumber operations in Florida west of Tampa Bay. In 1896, Mr. John Ecker bought all of Drifting Sands' assets including mills and millrace rights east of town from Mrs. Jennie Muhlenberg Hutton for $10 per share! On July 3rd 1898 Mrs Hutton donated 100 acres (40 hectares) southeast of Wellington to establish Muskegon Heights School District #5 where Wellington Elementary School currently stands! When World War II began on September 2nd 1939, many local residents volunteered for military service; many men worked at the local factories making munitions or doing other essential tasks within the war effort such as building roads and bridges across rivers or manufacturing radios overseas! When hostilities ended on May 8th 1945 there were still many local veterans working throughout various government offices such as those responsible for Social Security Administration or Veterans Affairs - an indication that wartime mobilization had not destroyed traditional values quite so completely as some may have feared! Upon Victory Parade Day 1945 there were more than 20% unemployed veterans living within city limits according to City Manager Harry Glasscock! On November 12th 1951 Mayor Jno Wessner dedicated Our Lady Of Peace Catholic Church property off Route 4252 adjacent to Six Mile Road/Route 4252 which would become home to Christ Episcopal Church until it merged with First Presbyterian Church reopening its doors October 1st 2002 just two days after Hurricane Charley struck landfall causing major damage across much inland Polk County killing dozens including several members of Our Lady Of Peace Parish!). Captain Richard Wellesley Elementary School was established circa 1961 atop part remains from former Drifting Sands Lumber Company Sawmill located eastside off I-4 & 6am Fri Oct 1st2002
