The Wellington area of Florida was first settled in the early 1800s. At that time, there were no firearms restrictions and people used whatever they could find to defend themselves against Native Americans and other predators. The gun targets history in Wellington, Florida began with the founding of what is now known as the Seminole Nation in 1835. The tribe reserved land near present-day Wellington for their own use, so residents had to get a license from the government to sell hunting or fishing licenses. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General James H. Polk ordered all civilian firearms be surrendered to Confederate forces. Many civilians in Jacksonville and Orlando caches weapons and stored them away on their properties until it was too late. Consequently, many of these guns still exist today and are considered historical artifacts by many Winnipeggers and Floridians alike. After the war ended, new settlers arrived in what is now Wellington from Georgia and Alabama. Initially, these individuals did not have any interest in owning guns since they doubted that they would ever need them again during their lifetime. However, over time some of these newcomers started purchasing homes in this locality and started using shotguns for target shooting purposes only after experiencing some success at such activities around town.. The Gun Owners’ Society (GOs) was formed hereabouts soon after; its purpose being simply to promote responsible gun ownership among its members – something which had been conspicuously lacking hitherto! In 1973 GO president Tom Kline set up a storefront target range on Main Street called “The Range” which has continued functioning ever since as a popular social gathering spot for locals & visitors alike (and currently home to several airsoft games). Needless to say we have become quite proficient at taking down those pesky targets!

In 1918, when Seminole Nation Indian Territory became part of Florida, Wellington became part of the newly established Miami-Dade County government and continued to be known as Birdtown until 1961 when it changed its name to honor General John Pemberton during World War II because he had served as military governor of Miami-Dade County from 1942 until his death in 1945. In 1962, Wellington successfully petitioned for statehood and became an official city within Miami-Dade County; however, it retained itsBirdtown nickname until 1971 when it officially changed its name to honor General John Pemberton once again due to his service during the Vietnam War Era as Commanding Officer of United States Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (USMARSAT) in Miami Beach – making him one of only two people ever honored with this distinction within Palm Beach County alone (the other being then-Mayor Don Shriver). In 1985, after more than 40 years as a municipality governed by commissioners appointed by county officials through citizen participation rather than elected officials like those in Broward or Palm Beach Counties – including 16 years under Mayor David Key – Wellington voters passed a resolution authorizing them to become a full-fledged city under state law without waiting for any further county approvals since they were already represented on City Council by three members representing different districts within the metropolitan area (i.e., north/central business district; south/southeast border; west side), all while still abiding by their Birdtown moniker because that's how they've always been able to run things according to tradition! Wellington is a small town in Clay County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1902 by settlers from Wellington, Rhode Island. The name of the town comes from the Battle of Waterloo which took place on October 24, 1815 and is also said to be derived from "Welcombe" or "Wilcox". The first post office in Wellington opened on November 15, 1902. The town was named for General John A. Wellington who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Florida before becoming a general during World War I. In 1907, the state legislature passed an act that established a public school system in Clay County and after two years of effort by farmers and citizens of the town, Wellington High School was built on what is now Town Hall Square across Main Street from the original Post Office building (later known as First Congregational Church). In 1915, when World War I began and most people were away fighting overseas, local residents gathered together to form what became known as "The Volunteer Ambulance Corps." This group purchased equipment for transport to help war-time veteransage home safely after injury or illness. From 1916 until 1919 they transported patients to various hospitals all over Clay County using horse-drawn ambulances with stretchers running between cars parked along Main Street east of First Congregational Church. On December 6th 1918 while services were being held at First Congregational Church following World War I's end there occurred an accidental fire that destroyed much of both upper Main Street and part of east Frontenac Avenue within one block of the churchyard where many servicemen had been buried. This included Colonel George Armstrong Custer who died unmarried at age 27 days when his troop train derailed near Wellington just east of this small community on January 9th 1921 while en route to Fort Myers for maneuvers supporting US Troops in Korea; Custer's remains have never been found but are interred next to other soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery . It should be noted that although some buildings may have burned down as a result of this fire including Old Post Office building opposite First Congregational Church which still stands today (renovated into apartments) – no evidence exists showing any connection between this event and current day fires around Town Hall square either! In 1922-1923 new businesses were started up in downtown Wellington such as: Aumbingtons Emporium (a grocery store), The New Newsagency (an advertising agency), Gilded Cage Theatre Company (the first theater complex west of Tampa), Grandma's Restaurant & Bakery (owned by Mrsgriffin Bros.), Dr Pepper Bottles Incorporated ('Peanuts'), Waffle House Restaurant ('Waffles'), Joes Garage ('Joes') & Sons Cigar Store,'Lodge Theatre'. On July 4th 1923 Fenton Brewing Co., licensed by Publix Grocery chain opened its taproom adjacent to Gilded Cage Theatre Company with live music nightly starting at 7pm featuring Joe Pasternack acoustic guitar playing blues shows alternating with country/western songs led by Pasternack himself plus gospel quartets Saturdays evenings 8pm thru 12am; presently it is housed inside old Masonic Lodge across Court Road from Village Center shopping mall - Click here for more information about Fenton Brewing Co.'s past history In 1924 Widespread Panic played their only show outside North America at Cumberland Park Racetrack located southbound off US Highway 41 just westof Hwy 300 south exit 10 minutes prior start time then drove back onto road 41 northbound where they parked their car(s) overnight resulting in $5K damage done - photos can be seen HERE
