The Wellington area was home to a small agricultural community until the early 1900s. The first settlers in the area were J.B. and Nannie Goode, who arrived in 1887. They started a farm on what is now NW corner of Wellesley Avenue and Polk Street. The Goodes raised chickens, pigs, rabbits, cows, and horses; they also made butter, cheese, eggs, and flour from their crops. In 1911, the brothers bought an adjoining parcel of land and began to grow corn, beans, potatoes, onions, garlic (which they grew themselves), fruits (pears and pineapples), flowers ( honeysuckle and lilies), bushes (hickory trees) for furniture making purposes—a new industry in the town at that time. In 1915-16 the town’s first telephone line was built between NE corner of Wellesley Avenue and SW corner of Polk Street; this service helped connect residents with businesses in nearby Jacksonville. From 1916 until 1958 Wellington had its own post office which closed whenJacksonville consolidated its mail services with Florida State Post Office
