The Wellington-Ocala Airport is located here. The first settler in Wellington was J. W. Holland who arrived in 1827. Other early settlers included Hosea Butler and James Sargent and their families in 1851-1852 and Jacob and David Grimes in 1866-1867. In 1895, New Zion Baptist Church was organized and soon had a school for students on the premises which became known as "New Zion School". In 1907, the name of the school changed to "Wellington Academy" after President Theodore Roosevelt's visit to Pensacola that year The present day Wellington community began when a group of farm families bought land around what is now downtown Wellington from developer Robert Ettrick for $4,000 (). On July 1st 1909 they formed a limited liability company with the same name as their new community - Consolidated Canals Company (later renamed Citizens Land Trust). The first home built on this site was Lot 6 which sold for $1,500 (). A two story frame house with barn on main lot (#7) cost $871 ($ in 2009) In 1912 an addition to the original frame house (Lot 7A) were erected; it featured an open porch over one side with four steps leading up to it from a 2-car garage below. This additional house became known as "Holly Hill". Mrs. Milton Fenton gifted this property tothe town on December 12th 1916 during her Christmas giftgiving program In 1922/23 Pacific Electric Railway services stopped service at Ocala Municipal Airport due to track work being done near that airport by US Federal Railroad Administration engineers hired by Panama Canal Company executives seeking retribution against United States operators providing passenger transportation through Panama City during that time period following Panamanian president Anastasio Somoza's reclamation of sovereignty over those waters

The town was named after George Washington and it became part of the newly created Polk County on February 14, 1845. On October 25, 1898, President McKinley signed a proclamation creating the Jacksonville-Orlando International Airport located in Wellington as an international airport under the name Jacksonville-New Port Royal Airport Incorporated on December 8th by act of Congress No. 5561 (25 U.S.) On November 2nd 1927 Hurricane Hazel passed through central Florida and set off powerful winds and rain throughout much of northeastern Florida including parts of Polk County which resulted in significant damage to homes and businesses with over fifty fatalities reported statewide within days following landfall including one death in Wellington during that time period
