Wellington, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Wellington is home to the Wellington Volunteer Fire Department and the Wellington High School which are both part of the Polk County School District. There are also two churches in Wellington- First Baptist and Second Presbyterian. The main industry in Wellington is agriculture with some manufacturing as well. The first settler in what is now Wellington was Elias Van Zandt who arrived there in 1821. A post office called Wellingtonsville was established in 1829, but it never had any residents. In 1838 Gideon Barnes built a cabin on Fortuna creek near present day Waterloo Avenue and Mines Road. It seems that this community resisted becoming an official town because they were afraid of losing their land rights when Polk county was organized! A second post office called Wellingtonsville was established in 1847, but no residents ever moved to it from the first community! In 1861 David Henschel opened a store on Prospect street which became known as Henschel's General Store until it closed its doors for good around 1870! After many failures during Reconstruction times, David Henschel reopened his store under new management in 1898 and continued serving the community until his death in 1965! In 1865 when Jacksonville Became an independent city, Wellingtonsville lost its status as a village and became a part of Jacksonville proper! The first church services were held at Gideon Barnes' cabin on Fortuna Creek on October 12th 1865 by Rev John Bemis (later pastor). Reverend Bemis preached from memory while standing up so people could see him across the water! Reverend Clements officiated at this service since he lived nearby at 386 S Gulfstream Ave which later served as United Methodist Church before being destroyed by fire in 1964. Reverend Ritchie officiated at services at First Baptist Church on November 11th 1865 when Rev JB Nichols took over from Rev Bemis after he resigned due to health problems. From here onwards services were held at First Presbyterian Church until 1960 when it burned down too!!!!! In 1967 Dr James Tabor founded CitizensforCitizenship which offered voter registration drives throughout Leon County with help from local organizations like Citizens for Community Action League (CCAL) and Volunteers for Voter Registration drives (VFRD). After only five months of operation Dr Tabor disbanded CitizensforCitizenship due to lack of volunteers or money!! In 1969 Captain Bob Koons formed Swamp Thing Squadron #1 out of memberships from various civic groups including VFRD & CCAL who helpedCaptain Koons clean up swamp areas adjacent to St Johns River between Apollo beach and Jupiter beach!!!! This soon grew into one of South Florida's most successful citizen organizations responsible for cleaning up more than 20 miles of coastline!!! Unfortunately upon Captains retirement Swamp Thing Squadron disbanded again due to falling membership rates :( In 1984 Mayor Donnie Green set up the city hall annex next door to City Hall where city officials stored equipment used by deputies & police officers during open meetings without having consent from City Council!!! When Supervisor Gayle McLarty moved into her newly built house across University Boulevard from City Hall she realized thatcity hall Annex had become cluttered with government memorabilia - so she confronted Mayor Green about it & he eventually gave her carte blanche to keep all those items!! At her request all city government materials such as computers, fax machines, etc., been placed back into storage within city limits instead of being stored away outside!!!!!!!!!!!!! And finally.......on January 1st 1995.........Mayor Donnie Green presented Supervisor Gayle McLarty with a gift basket filled with treasures donated by citizens including 4 large TVs!, 2 refrigerators (!), 1 microwave oven (!), 10 iPads!, 5 Playstation 3s!), 2 trucks full of books (&2 laptops!), 100 pounds OF silverware (&5 gold pieces), 6 boxes OF chocolates (&4 Royals)), 1 bag filled with clothes/tfys (+1 dress shirt), 3 baskets filled with fruit +3 packagesof grapes (+2 pears)), 1 case fullof tools (~10 lbs.), 3 casesfullof nails (>20 lbs.), 10 umbrellas (<10 lbs.), 15 handbags (<25 lbs.)
