Wellington, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. It was founded on December 12, 1906 by J.B. Wellington and his family as a seasonal hunting and fishing camp for white hunters and their dogs. The first permanent settler in the area was Rufus Cato who arrived in 1907. In 1908, the family of John Fenton erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in Wellington. By 1910, the town had a population of 15 people and was named after Wellesley, England's capital city at the time. In 1916, Wellington became an incorporated community with a population of 100 residents. The name "Wellington" came from J.B.'s elderly father who had originally settled there about 1847 as part of the Second Seminole War against Spanish forces under General Manuel de la Costa y de Santa Anna. A post office was established at Wellington in 1916 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1966; during that time, it served as the focal point for local commerce with general merchandise being shipped to Gainesville and Tampa through Fort Myers Ferry Terminal on Lake Okeechobee The post office closed because of lack of mail traffic due to World War II; however, postal service resumed briefly during 1946-1947 when wartime restrictions were relaxed In 1951, economist Milton Friedman visited Wellington while he was teaching at Tulane University Friedman developed his theory of free markets which would later be applied to society at large During his stay there he also met then-Mayor Lloyd Behnke In 1952–1953 New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia made an official visit to Wellington La Guardia toured several towns along Florida's Gulf Coast before stopping at Wellesley where he met J.B., wife Eva (née McMahon), two children Lily (budding actress) and David (future mayor), parents Bessie Beaumont (of Stonington) and Orville Beaumont (veteran journalist) and several other relatives including sister Nellie Lee Chapman He also purchased land nearby for future development purposes

In 1916, the Legislature of Florida authorized the annexation of Wellington by Jacksonville, creating a new city with similar boundaries. The population of Wellington increased rapidly during World War II because of military activity in and around the town. In 1970, Jacksonville annexed Wellington again and renamed it Fort Pierce. The city has since declined in popularity and has been largely abandoned since 2000.
