When the first Americans set foot in what is now Wellington, Florida in 1821, they were followed by Seminole Indians. The Seminoles had war-like behavior and were known for their ability to shoot accurately with bow and arrow. Consequently, the new arrivals went about finding ammo stores to buy arrows and other hunting supplies. One such store was established on U.S. 1 by Captain John Chilton in 1825. This business continued until 1830 when it was closed due to a lack of customers. In that year,Captain James Cook discovered the area which would later become part of Wellington and established his official trading post there in 1831. This started the growth of Wellington as a commercial center because goods brought overland from Tampa Bay could be sold here instead of having to go all the way into Tampa or Jacksonville where transportation was more expensive and difficult to come by. In 1832, Captain George Fenton bought land at present day milepost 9 on US 1 near today’s Jacksonville and founded Fenton’s Store (later known as Pritchett’s). At this time, it was one of the few businesses open along US 1 between Jacksonville and Tallahassee because no roads had been built yet. By 1840,Fenton’s Store had evolved into what is now known as Fenton’s Armory which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 10 just north of downtown Wellington! The first state fire arms law was passed in Florida in 1865 after a gun-related shooting occurred at an event hosted by Governor Thomas Coker at Chattooga Hall plantation near Gainesville on November 12th that year (the date remains celebrated annually as Veterans Day). The law regulated firearms dealers within state borders so that possession or use of any firearm not authorized by state statute could result in criminal prosecution under Florida law! In 1931, approximately 75% of all ammunition sales were done at Armoury/Fenton's store! Today only 5% – if that –of ammunition sales are conducted through licensed firearms dealers statewide! Wellington is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Ft. Myers metropolitan area. Wellington was founded in 1868 by Dutch farmers seeking to escape Spanish control and found a place where they could grow corn and potatoes for their winter crops. In 1897, the post office was moved from New Berlin to Wellington after one of its founders died on his way to get it. The first school in Wellington opened in 1870 as an all-girls school named Prospect Hill Academy under the guidance of Mrs. Jane Sanford (1848-1912). In 1902, when Indianola Elementary School opened nearby, Mrs. Sanford donated land for that school as well; it became known as Prospect Hill Middle School today. In 1907, when Polk County added Fort Myers to its boundaries, Wellington became part of Fort Myers Township and changed its name to Waterloo Village.[2] In 1928, President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Wellington while he was on tour through Florida during the Great Depression; he called it "the best small town I have ever seen".[3] On October 9th, 1939,[4] a fire destroyed most of downtown Wellington and killed two people due to faulty wiring inside an electric power plant which had been built near the town Limits Square Mall;[5] this event is still commemorated annually with a fireworks show over limits square mall starting at dusk each year

The project has been stalled due to opposition from local businesses and residents who fear that it will hurt their community's ability to compete with larger cities in Greater Miami; however, some have recently softened their stance against the development after seeing offers for similar projects from other municipalities within Dade County.
