In 1969, Washington Avenue was renamed "Sir John Aird Road" in memory of Sir John Aird who had been Mayor of Wellington from 1924 until his death in 1955. Many notable people have lived or worked in Wellington over its history including Dr King George VI (who visited during World War II) and Fidel Castro; both were born here. It is interesting to note that while many of these businesses have closed or relocated over time due to various reasons (including competition from newer arrivals), some have still managed to stay open despite changing economic fortunes. For example, the Insurance Company of Jacksonville has been operating at its current location since 1927!
