Vero Beach is a small city in south-central Florida. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located on Pensacola Bay. In 1892, Jethro Gibbs's grandson John Fenton Gibbs donated land on Pensacola Bay for use as an airport runway; it was named for him in 1909 when he served as Director of Aviation at Fort Myer Army Base near Arlington Virginia during World War I. Over time various other airports were built within or adjacent to Vero Beach:naval air station NAS Jacksonville in 1948 when Naval Air Station Coral Gables was moved from Tampa to Jacksonville; Gainesville Airport GAIN in 1949 when Gainesville Municipal Airport opened; St Johns County Airport SJT in 1955 when Saint Johns County International Airport opened; Everglades National Park EAST side entrance off US Highway 90 6 miles (10 km) east of town in 1966 after George A Hickenlooper became Governor of Florida In addition, several shopping malls have been built within or adjacent to Vero Beach over the years: Sears Tower mall (1969), Everbank Center mall (1991), EXPRESSway mall (1999), Mallscenter Boulevard parkade (2002), BJ's Wharf Mall(2003), Courtyard by Marriott beachfront hotel(2007). Today there are many hotels and restaurants located within walking distance of downtown Verosbeach thanks to developments such as CityWalk development completed since 2006 including multiplexes Cinemark Parkway Place Stadium 1[4][5] as well as Whole Foods Market - now Neighborhood Market - just north of I-95 exit 78A/US 92 Business Loop[6]. Many local businesses have closed down over time due to competition from larger commercial districts closer to Interstate 95 such as South Port Regional Library District[7] or more recent development like Walt Disney World Resort - now known as Universal Orlando Theme Park - less than 2 miles away on Interstate 441 Exit 86B/Orlando International Speedway Exit 96A interchange between I-441/SR 407 freeway and SR 417 highway both directions.[8] However, some businesses that remain strong include Renaissance Marina [9], BP Miramar [10], Dollar Tree [11], Lighthouse Key Club [12], ABC News Westwood center annexe office complex – anchored by WJXT 7TV affiliate – which includes KPNX 1260 AM radio tower across street from building[13],[14],[15]; Windermere Golf Course – one mile long links two banks overlooking Pensacola Bay with championship golf courses available at nearby Buena Vista Country Club & Spa,[16] Islesboro Raceway[17],[18] and Jack Dempsey’s Café & Sports Bar facing State Road 9 opposite Daytona International Speedway also offers racing events each year beginning March Madness weekend Bring your friends! During World War II, many construction jobs were done in downtown Vero Beach yards by local companies such as RCA Victor Records which built four studios on State Street between First Avenue South and Third Street South; Allied Signal Company erected an extensive communications network throughout southeast Florida during World War II; Phillips Petroleum Company constructed gas stations throughout southernFlorida; Litton Industries made components for military planes used by Boeing Aircraft Corporation during World War II; Singer Sewing Machine Co.[l] manufactured lingerie for American soldiers during World War II; US Army Engineers built two airfields within one mile of downtownVeroBeach – "Omaha" (later known as Edwards Air Force Base) east of FourthStreetSouthand"Titus" (later known as Eglin Air Force Base) west of SeventhStreetSouth – latter being used primarily for training purposes until 1948 when it was transferred to United States Air Forces Central Command under activation Control Group 8379 with headquarters at Plantation ;[2] all these activity aside from providing employment to more than 12000 locals helped contribute to $190 million economic growth during 1945-1948 alone! In 1946–47 GIs repatriated back home from Europe created vast amounts new business opportunities for locals especially since war production stopped abruptly……………………………………………………………..
The area now known as Vero Beach was first settled by the Tequesta people in the early 1800s. The town of Vero was founded in 1825, and it became a major stop on the Florida road system. In 1853, Vero was made a county seat, and it remained an important center for commerce and culture until the 1950s. In that year, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Vero Beach, leaving the town essentially abandoned. However, over time, some developers began to explore potential uses for the vacant buildings and storefronts. In 2002, they started work on developing what would become today's Vero Beach Pier.
