The pepper spray story begins in Venice, Florida, on October 6, 1962. A group of men were gathered around a table to discuss the purchase of pepper spray when one man stood up and announced that he had been sent a shipment from Europe. The others quickly followed suit and began discussing their own potential purchases. Suddenly, someone shouted out that they had seen something moving in the distance and all turned to see a large green snake slithering towards them down a tree trunk. As the men screamed for help, the snake leapt onto one of them and bit his arm off before fleeing into the trees. store owner Don Hickey was so angered by this event that he immediately ordered all citizens to get rid of all pepper spray cans and handguns within his business premises. This order was later rescinded due to public outcry but it is still remembered today as one of Venice's earliest incidents with pepper spray.

Venice, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Polk County, Florida, United States. It lies on the western bank of the St. Johns River at its junction with the Venice Branch of the Floridian Electric Railway. The population was 1,957 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by brothers Charles and John Doherty in 1887 as a post office and trading post on their father's farm west of Venice. In 1924 they built their first home and opened their second store in 1925. The Venables were active leaders in local politics and served as members of both the De Soto Countyaugustauge Commission and the De Soto County Board of Education from 1923 to 1953. They also raised money for many local charities such as The Salvation Army and American Cancer Society. In 1951, Mrs. Venable donated her entire estate to charity which became known as "The Venable Estate." Today, Venice continues to be an important cultural center for De Soto County with its variety of art galleries, theaters, restaurants and antique stores all located within walking distance of one another making it easy for residents to explore this unique community while enjoying its rich history
