The town experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases including Fort Lauderdale and MacDill Air Force Base. During the war, industries such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing grew rapidly; however, many businesses closed during the postwar recession because workers lost their jobs due to automation sweeping through those industries. The town's population peaked at around 200 in 1960 but declined steadily until it reached its low point in 2000 when there were only ninety people living in tents or trailers on Meetinghouse Road near Herald Square Park. In 1916, Tampa annexed what is now Venice as part of its growing city government but never fully merged with it due to cultural differences between the two municipalities. In 1984, following years of growth and development within both cities combined, they finally merged into one municipality with 3,600 residents
