Venice, Florida is a small city located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Venice is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bounded on the south by Jupiter Island and to the north by Lake Worth and Westchester County. The area that now forms Venice was first inhabited by Native Americans who called it "Tocokonkoma". In 1763, Captain John receipts from Spain discovered Treasure Island (present-day Cocoa Beach) and named it after his hometown of Venice, Italy. In 1821, Captain Isaac Watts landed at Venice Bay with his fleet of four ships to explore what lay beyond Spanish Key. He named two of the islands in this bay Venetian Key and Captiva Key because they had been purchased from Spain for £2 3s 4d each. The city was founded on June 20th 1853 by Nicholas de la Vega as a result of a land grant given him by Governor Thomas Pritchard. Venice acquired its present location when Fort Pierce was built on an island in downtown St Petersburg in 1857 using money obtained from a sale of three thousand acres along the Gulf coast to make way for Fort Pierce. With over 1 million residents living within its boundaries during World War II, Venice experienced some of its most difficult times; but has since regained much lost ground in terms of poverty and crime rates relative to other large Uptown cities across America - making it one of South Florida's fastest growing communities over the last few decades! The original settlers were from nearby Stonington who had moved to what is now Hillsborough County in 1824. By 1830, population had grown to 7 people and a school was built. A post office was established in 1836 and mail brought in by horse and buggy arrived daily. In 1840, a mill was built and started processing lumber from local timberlands.
