The first settler was John Titus in 1836 and the town was platted in 1838. The name comes from Titusville Plantation which was located near what is now downtown Titusville. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the ocean and its ability to get goods by boat or by rail. A railroad station was built in 1882 and it remains one of the few Amtrak stations in Florida today. In 1964, the original shopping mall opened and became known as "The Mall". In 1970, a new high school (now University High School) opened and quickly became one of the largest schools in southern Florida. In 2001, USF's College Park Campusopened nearby making Titusville one of only two towns within Jacksonville with an NCAA Division I university campus within their borders (the other being Gainesville).

Titusville is located along State Road 729 and U.S. Route 301 south of Fort Lauderdale and north of Hollywood. The first settlers in Titusville were French colonists from Saint-Domingue who arrived in 1768. In 1821, Captain John Fenton founded a ferry service from Titusville to Key West with his slave trading vessel "America". After the American Civil War ended in 1865, the area became part of Broward County until it was annexed by Miami-Dade County in 1972. The town was named for General James Wilkinson (1785–1859), an officer during the Seminole Wars and a delegate to the First Seminole Congress that condemned de facto slavery in Cuba while visiting there on December 10, 1835. Wilkinson's father also served as pastor at Stokes Chapel near what is now downtown Titusville before moving to Titusville proper in 1827. The name may have been derived from "Titus" (a Latin name meaning "town") because Wilkinson had land grant from King Tippecanoe III of Indiana for a farm he named "New Salem." In 1862–63, local farmers started growing cotton on farms west of downtown after being encouraged by Colonel Edward Peele of Tampa Bay Railway Company who leased land west of US 1 to do so when he opened his railway line through central Florida connecting Tampa with Jacksonville and St Petersburg via Winter Garden and Clearwater Beach; this allowed entrepreneurs like Easley cattle buyer Arent Crouch Sr., insurance agent Daniel Bryan (brother-in-law of Ulysses S Grant) and postmaster Jno Hines Sr., among others to get rich rapidly developing citrus production areas around Pensacola Bayou adjacent to what are now Longboat Key Boulevard/SR 729 east of I-10 Exit 5A (now SR 762). The business opportunity generated by railroad development led some residents – especially those living near US 1 – to move into downtown where they erected handsome brick buildings which still stand today including the original Post Office building built c1910 which contains both its public address system (PASX) phone lines(originally operated outlayed privately to provide coverage for churches[2]), as well as an exhibit hall displaying items seized during law enforcement operations; other commercial buildings include: A&W Pizza franchisee Donnie Whitehead's home built 1922 next door occupied until 1984 by Waffle House restaurant chain founder David Boggs; Peoples Bank building constructed 1925 acrossfrom Lafayette Elementary School acrossfrom current day movie theater complex containing multiplexes such as Regal Cinemas - one notable structure demolished since then; Floridian Hotel built 1928 adjoining present day arena complex housing multiplex cinemas - all but one destroyed since then including Floridian Theatre itself which closed its doors circa 1975 after play Dates began airing nightly live on ABC network Univision affiliate WPLG starting July 15 1957 due WPLG purchase[3]; VFW Post #867 plaza across street from Country Club Plaza just east off SR 792 currently used as parking lot for church services held there every Sunday morning prior thereto Crusader Baptist Church also uses that lot presently wit Spencers Apartments dating back to 1926 According to oral history compiled by author Dwayne Dixon late 1990s many more businesses were situated throughout Downtown walkable street grid prioritizing pedestrian oriented commerce over automobiles Downtown Business District boundaries included Old Town Square between Main Street & Airport Boulevard NE corner Willis Avenue NE corner NW corner Pinellas Drive SW Corner Live Oak Drive SW CornerSE corner SW corner Dunnellon Drive once encompassed mostly residential areas now largely open space .
