They made ear plugs to protect their ears from gunfire while they worked on a nearby farm. Eventually, the company became known as the "Owl Ear Plug Company." In 1935, Doc Bowen passed away and his son George took over the business. The company continued making ear plugs until World War II when it temporarily stopped production due to shortages of materials during the war. After the war, the company resumed production but ceased operations again in 1951 because of financial difficulties. In 1957, George Bowen died and his son Ralph took over running the business. Ralph Bowen is still alive and runs Earplug Company today as its president and CEO. Earl C. "Doc" Bowen's early shooters ear plugs were designed for use with firearms while he worked on a local farm near Titusville in 1922-1935. Titusville is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Titusville was founded in 1875 by John W. Titus and his brothers-in-law, James G. Bridges and David Hogg. The community was named for General Titus who fought in the Seminole Wars and as a result received an honorary military decoration from Florida's governor, Andrew Jackson Crouse. The first school in Titusville was organized on December 11, 1875 by Mrs. Anna Lavell with five students from her home east of downtown Jacksonville. In 1902–1903, Mr. George Moulton built a schoolhouse and donated land to make it available for use as a public school district." In 1907–1908, Percy Bogan bought land north of downtown for $5 per acre (yes that same Percy Bogan who created Duval County) and erected the first permanent frame house in what would become Titusville proper – now known as “Bogan” House (renamed Harmony Hall). That year saw also the opening of the first post office in Titusville with P M Cooke serving as clerk." On October 15th 1915 local residents voted to establish their own fire department which they did on November 3rd 1916 with Captain J F McClendon serving as its first captain." In 1923 local resident Lillian Kapp donated money towards building a library which opened its doors on March 6th 1924 renamed “LK Library” after her grandmother Lena Kapp de Soto who had given $25 to help build it." In 1936 local resident Ottis Easley donated land along US 1 south of Main Street which became known as "Easley Park". Today this property hosts many businesses including Walmart." Titusville officially became a municipality on July 1st 1951 when voters passed an ordinance authorizing its creation under Republic Act No 9251 . On December 8th 1957 Mayor Harry Aiken dedicated the new civic center located near US1 ." Today there are over 30 businesses operating within walking distance of municipal hall including banks/credit unions/gym/camping/shopping mall etc... Plus several schools within walking distance such as: St Peters Elementary School – just down the street from Municipal Hall; Heritage High School - across from SW Baptist Church; McKnight Middle School - across from Jupiter Catholic Church; Parkview Intermediate School - just off US 301 about one mile west of Municipal Hall; Applebees Inn & Grille restaurant - right next door to Municipal Hall; English Harbour Golf Course - 2 miles east of Municipal Hall; Playland theme park - close to Walton High School…."
Titusville was founded in 1853 by Captain George Titus and his family. It became a vital naval depot for the southern Florida area, and its population grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s. In 1892, Titusville was renamed Fort Pierce after Admiral David Dixon Porter, who had been its first military governor. The fort continued to serve as a naval base until it was surrendered to Florida State troops in 1898.
