Titusville is named after General Titus O'Neil who fought in the American Revolution and was captured and held as a POW for six years before being liberated at Yorktown. The first permanent settler in Titusville was John Denton in 1821. A post office called Titusville was established in 1825, and remained in operation until 1903. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Sebago River near present-day Jacksonville and its Mill Creek School District which included schools for white children as well as black students from surrounding villages. By 1930, the town had developed into an all-white enclave with only a few black residents. In 1954, voter approved passage of "An Act to Amend the Constitution of Florida" which granted African Americans rights equivalent to those enjoyed by whites within their respective districts. This began what has been known as "the Negro Integration Movement" in Florida and led to numerous protests throughout the state against this unconstitutional discrimination. In 1970, changes were made to the constitution which guaranteed voting rights based on race rather than place of residence; however, these reforms did not achieve widespread compliance because many African Americans still considered Titusville their home city and sought protection under that banner instead of seeking equal treatment under new laws statewide. A fire destroyed most of downtown Titusville on November 12th 1978; it remains one of longest fires ever recorded in Polk County history On January 8th 2009 through proclamation by Governor Charlie Crist ordered all public buildings be closed until further notice due to concerns about lead poisoning from old paintINTERESTING NOTE: According to local news sources Lead paint levels have increased significantly over time (estimated date back pre-2008) so any closures or clean up may very well mean more lead exposure!

Titusville is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Titusville was founded on December 11, 1892 by J.D. Hickey and his wife Esther with the goal of providing a "recreational resort for people who were seeking relaxation from their workaday lives." The town's name comes from Drusilla (a Roman goddess) and Titus, a Roman general who conquered Africa and Spain. The first post office opened in 1896. In 1902, the Hickey brothers built the first hotel in Titusville which became known as "The Best Western Hotel". That same year, they also started the first electric street light in Florida. By 1907, there were over 50 businesses in town including several banks and grocery stores; it had reached its peak growth during World War I when local manufacturers produced munitions for the war effort. After the war ended in 1918, economic recession hit Titusville hard as many of its manufacturing jobs vanished due to plant closings or moving to other countries; however, some new businesses appeared such as an insurance agency and two gas stations along State Road 436 which helped keep the community going until it lost its status as a resort following Hurricane Andrew in 1992 that destroyed much of downtown Titusville. Today it has regained most of its former prominence as a bedroom community for Orlando with many residents commuting to work in nearby Sanford or Kissimmee Valley cities like Ormond Beach or Lake Worth simply because those areas have more job opportunities than Titusville does within its own borders
