Titusville is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. Titusville was founded on December 12th, 1884 by Augustus Titus and his wife Sarah. It was named after John C. Titus who served as US Minister to Spain from 1953-1957 and also donated land for the town. On October 22nd, 1907,building began on what would become the first school building in Titusville when Dr. J.H McDowell and Mrs McDowell donated their home for use as a schoolhouse and gymnasiums were constructed on the property which became known as Goode Hall School District #2/Titusville Elementary School". Goode Hall burned down in 1951 but district administrative offices were never destroyed and they are still today used as office space within the Monroe County government complex located on State Road 501 North in downtown Titusville which includes portions of both Goode Halls original property and additions made subsequent to its donation including: Rivers Edge High School (now Polk Middle School), Ridgecrest Golf Club & Country Club - now known as Ironton Park Place Resort & Spa - formerly known as Placid Lake Country Club - formerly known as Atlantic Highlands Golf Course - now Lakeside Villas The growth of tourism in Orange County following World War II led to an increase in job opportunities for people living near Walt Disney World during those years so developers started moving into areas such as Titusville that had few development opportunities because of lack of water access or other infrastructure issues. One such developer was HUGHES CORPORATION who purchased 4200 acres (1 km²) around what is today downtown Titusville from Augustus Titus for $5 million plus an additional $2 million worth of bonds in 1955 followed by further purchases totaling 25 acres (10 km²) over a period of 3 years culminating with the acquisition of 95% ownership by Hughes Corporation from Citizens National Bank on January 2nd, 1959 for an undisclosed amount being paid back over 10 years with interest). In 1969 Hughes Corporation sold its holdings to WALT DISNEY COMPANY through their subsidiary DISNEYLAND INCorporated bringing about increased traffic along Interstate 441 to Downtown Orlando making it possible to finally build what would become Tomorrowland walkway which opened up much needed retail space within Downtown Orlando between Epcot Center/Walt Disney World Avenue Of The Stars/Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme park while also creating new jobs at nearby outlets like Barnes & Noble ans RadioShack
