Titusville is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. He served as treasurer of Pinellas County from 1894 to 1902, then as speaker of the county legislature from 1901 until his death four years later. In 1916, Witherspoon purchased 640 acres along US 441 south of modern day Titusville for $2 million dollars – making him one of the most wealthiest men ever to have set foot in Florida: At that time US highways were well-maintained routes that signposted towns like Daytona Beach and Fort Myers direct travelers north or south (instead of east or west). Witherspoon planned to use this land for farming purposes; however, he never completed his plan because World War I disrupted travel patterns across the country, making it difficult for him to get access to his land. After World War I ended, Witherspoon resumed development plans but died before they could be finalized; today's buildings on his land date back to these early days.
