Founded in 1868, it has experienced a number of changes over the years, including becoming a center for industry and commerce during the late 19th century; hosting a large slave population during the early 20th century; and experiencing an influx of immigrants during the 21st century. The city was originally named after General Titus Maceo, who fought heroically against Spanish colonists in what is now Tampa Bay. In 1868, developers purchased land east of downtown from Native American traders and began developing it into a town. The first building built in Titusville was the Post Office, which was constructed on Union Avenue between Second Street and ThirdStreet. By 1870, there were also six stores, two churches, two schools, four hotels/motels, three grocery stores/marketplaces, four farmhouses (one still standing), two watermills (one still standing), three sawmills (both destroyed by fire), four saloons (destroyed by fire), five blacksmiths/forges (all destroyed by fire), five carpenters/ Jointers (all destroyed by fire), seven farmers (six of whom remain active in the city today), eight or ten negroes working as sharecroppers on seventeen farmssteads within one mile of downtown ; twelve white households resided within one mile of downtown; twenty-eight full time residents worked at least part time within one mile of downtown ; fourteen light rail service stations served local commuters ; six banks ; eleven physicians ; thirteen pharmacists ; thirty-eight tradesmen In 1901–1902,[9] Titusville annexedarea north of Highway 301 known as Gadsden County . This area included present day Polk County , Ft Myers Beach , Naples , Sanford , Winter Haven , Jensen Beach and much of Hardee County . A new courthouse was built on U.S. 1 about midway between Daytona Beach and Live Oak . The original courthouse burned down in 1911 but was replaced with another courthouse which still stands today .[10][11] During World War II,[12] Titusville became an important munitions production site due to its location near both Fort Dix and Naval Air Station Miramar . Over 8 million rounds were produced at this site alone.[13] After the war ended, many new businesses sprang up in Titusville including Home Depot ([14]), TJ Maxx ([15]), Sears & Roebuck ([16])and JCPenney ([17]). With so many businesses existing throughout the decades following World War II – especially those that have continued through current times – it can be difficult to determine which factors contributed most toodusituation during this time period. Titusville is a small town in north-central Florida. It is the county seat of Polk County, and it has a population of about 10,000 people. The name "Titusville" was derived from the location of an early plantation. The community was originally named after Titus Welles Booth, an American Revolutionary War hero who served as a colonel in the Georgia militia. In 1855, Titusville became part of the new Confederate States of America and was renamed Jacksonville. After the war, Titusville reverted to its original name and continued to grow rapidly as a farming community. Titusville is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee– Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Titusville is home to the Titusville Volunteer Fire Department and Memorial Park. The first permanent settler in Titusville was James Hickey who came toFlorida in 1838 with his family. In 1839, he married Ann Beasley and they had six children: John (1840-1924), James (1841-1925), Fannie (1843-1900), Sarah A., and Martha Etta (1845-1920). Ann Hickey died childless in 1850. James Hickey Jr. married Emmaline Burr on February 12, 1855 in Orange County, Florida and they had four children: Augustus P., Anna Bessie Furnas Morse Stanton & Hugh Garnett Hickey Sr.. After their marriage, James Hickey Jr.'s family moved to Polk County where they resided until their death in 1925. In 1865, J C Pope bought 160 acres west of present day Titusville from Driscoll for $10 per acre ($4 peracre today). Pope developed what is now known as Pope's Prairie which included three cotton plantations along with two sawmills and one gristmill that shaped the town's early economy. In 1886 Pope sold his land to Wabash Railroad Company for $2 per acre ($0.50 peracre today). The railroad built a depot at what is now called Stephenson Avenue which housed both passenger trains and freight cars until it closed down in 1970. During its time as a major employer in the community, Wabash Railroad also donated land for a new high school which opened on December 6th of that year named after them – Wabash High School downtown today still bears this name! A post office called "Pope's Prairie" was established at what is now called Stephenson Avenue on October 15th of 1886 by Mrs Mckenzie King who flew into Tampa Bay from New York City on November 3rd for her sister Evalyn's wedding there that week. Mr President George Washington Wood took delivery of mail here September 16th from St Augustine via boat on Lake Pontchartrain! Mrs King was so impressed by President Wood's visit that she ordered all flowers sent to him instead of Albany! As Postmaster General during Presidents Harrison & Clinton years - Mr Wood became an honorary citizenof Titusville! Mrs King later moved away but her influence remains today through her donation to WW II veterans' memorial fund . Unfortunately due to fire damage some vital records were lost including those related back to Mrs Mckenzie King herself - though we are doing our best to digitize them! During World War II – when available resources allowed – local farmers produced fresh fruits & vegetables for troops stationed overseas; many soldiers attended services conducted throughout the season at local churches like First Methodist Church near campus where Pastor Fenton preached Saturday mornings!!
