The name "Titusville" is thought to come from Titus Baptist Church which was founded in 1851 by John Titus and his wife Anna. The first settlers in what is now Titusville were Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1839. They named their community after two ministers from Scotland who had been converted to Christianity on a voyage to America: Rev. Jameson Macdonald and Rev. David Hunter. In 1841, Methodists migrated to the area and built a church and small school. Gradually other denominations joined the Methodist church, until it was reorganized as an Episcopal congregation in 1886-87 under Revs Julius Cordon (1812-1892) and Edward Payson (1827-1906). Until 1911 there was no school within walking distance of any home of habitation; children attended public schools located several miles away or free private academies for white children operated by black families until such time as the local white school system became racially segregated following passage of state NAACP laws during World War II In 1903, Driggs Brothers Canning Company made an important contribution to the growth of Titusville by opening its cannery on Pensacola Bayou across from modern day Dowling Elementary School then known as Pinecrest Schoolhouse where Harrison Ford filmed scenes for "Forrest Gump". During World War II, many businesses closed due to lack of supply or bombed out buildings but some such as Phillips PetroleumCompany reopened after the war using new facilities adjacent to present day Dowling Elementary School with increased production capacity After years of decline starting around 1970 when most industry left town due primarily to changing economic conditions including loss of key customers attracted by newer towns development nearby such as Marathon oil company's giant refinery facility about 1/4 mile away on UF Plant Road that produced gasoline for Miami & Tallahassee buses etc., things started{to} change somewhat with construction beginning in earnest on what would become known locally as "The Great Pub Project" consisting of building 3 retail stores(one east side store facing Pensacola Bayou), 13 restaurant dining rooms(including 6 Shell gas stations),new parks/lawn bowling alleys/campgrounds etc.(which included 2 Tennis Courts) just southwest corner High Street between State Road 811 (SR 811) & SR 313 (now US 441)) that destroyed numerous homes along with infrastructure including over 100 acres rural landowner's fields & woods - finally putting an end once and for all{the} once&forall decline when[the] Great Pub Project opened its doors on October 14th 1996 becoming one{of} Duval County's longest running successful business venture Tuscaloosa Regional Medical Center has been operating since 1963 serving patients throughout western Duval County while also providing education opportunities through their completionmentally upgraded Health Sciences Campus which houses both primary care clinics specialties Pediatrics Endocrinology Neurology Cardiology Hematology Oncology Psychiatry Behavioral Health Neonatal Care Gynecologic Surgery Obstetrics Gynecology Allergy Immunology Nephrology pain management Endocrinology cardiology hematology gastroenterology dermatologists podiatry sports medicine family practice nutrition
