Titusville, Florida is one of the oldest communities in the state of Florida. It was founded by Captain James A. Cook on August 29, 1824 as a trading post on the Stono River. Titusville is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,363 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Titusville were two families from Ontario, Canada, who arrived on July 4, 1836. They named their new community for Titus O'Neil, an Irish general who had fought against Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War and then served as US Minister to Spain before retiring in 1853. In 1850, a group of Englishmen arrived in Titusville and founded a cotton plantation called "Cotton Ridge". Over time the English colonists became traders and investors with business interests in Mobile and other parts of Alabama and Georgia before relocating to Titusville in 1875 when they acquired title to land along Tampa's primary waterway. The growth of citrus production soon followed; by 1907 there were more than 20 fruit trees producing oranges, apples, pears and figs on 7 acres (2 ha). By 1920 there were 50 acres (20 ha) of orchards with 615 fruit trees yielding over 1 million fruits per acre (4 tonnes/ha). In 1925 local entrepreneurs formed the First National Bank which remains active today as one of Hillsborough County's leading commercial banks. One result of this rapid growth was increased traffic through Main Street – now known as State Road 98 – with businesses opening up along both sides until just beyond Today's Drive; today only a few remain original contributing assets to what has become one of South Florida's most vibrant communities. One such early business success story was that of John Cushman & Sons Florists which opened its doors on November 5th 1912 after years spent importing flowers direct from Europe from suppliers including Holland’s Franschgrave florists. From its inception until it closed its doors nearly 90 years later on October 26th 2009 due to economic development pressures within Floriculture adjacent thereto; Titusville’s oldest continuously operating business managed by family hands! The store continued operation for 10 extra days providing floral services for area residents until finally succumbing to market forces that ultimately destroyed many small businesses throughout South Florida during the Great Recession! Today Titusville offers visitors much more than just history - namely culture where restaurants offer Americanized European cuisine similar to what you would find at home while galleries exhibiting art from all over the world give visitors plenty opportunity to explore everything from contemporary photography installations allthe way back up through traditional painting techniques used centuries ago!
