By 1850, about 60 people lived in Titusville; by 1860, there were 150 residents living there. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson renamed Titusville after General John Ephantus Henderson as part of his policy ofmail name changeings announced during his presidency to improve public morale following the American Civil War. Henderson had been given military honors including being made colonel general under Ulysses S Grant and brigadier general under Ulysses S Grant's father-in-law Winfield Scott Hancock. From its early days as a small settlement, Titusville developed into an agricultural center with crop production accounting for most of its economic activity until after World War II when Significantly Manufacturing became dominant due to rapid growth in automotive manufacturing within adjacent Hillsborough County.(Hillsborough County has since become one of South Florida's major metropolises.) This period also saw significant growth in retail trade with businesses like Sears & Roebuck opening local locations from what were then small townships; these developments helped spur further development around Court Road/Park Avenue through late 20th century times into today's commercial district encompassing most aspects of downtown business culture along with housing developments lining Court Road/Park Avenue itself up through today's centennial celebration years ago this week - making this once sleepy farming town into one of modern day contenders for "The Villages".
