Temple Terrace is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,776 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1907 and named for St. John's Episcopal Church on nearby Clearwater Beach. Development began in the 1920s as a result of the opening of a railroad line through the area and ensuing growth in tourism. The first school opened in 1926 and the first post office in 1928. A church and two bungalows were built around 1950 to serve as single family homes and are still standing today. In 1969, Temple Terrace became associated with NASCAR when it became home to the stock car racing facility known then as Daytona International Speedway (now Daytona International Speedway Motorsports Park). In 2002, Hurricane Katrina hit southern Florida and caused extensive damage to both businesses and homes; however, no injuries or fatalities occurred within Temple Terrace or its immediate vicinity. Today, Temple Terrace continues to grow as a bedroom community for commuters living near Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union/Homes Bankuey Boulevard (north), US Highway 1 (south), Interstate 434 (east), US Highway 19 (west) and many other shopping malls across eastern Florida. The history of Temple Terrace can be traced back over 100 years to Methodist missionaries doing service among Seminole Indian tribes who inhabited this area then called "Titusville." The Methodists had come from North America during 1871-1872 aboard HMS Bounty under Captain Cook's command after their shipwreck off Cape York Peninsula Australia while searching for Northwestern Australian land that would eventually become Queensland—and so they set up house among these natives on land acquired from Chief Wakulla by General James Hernando de Soto shortly before his expedition discovered Florida on October 9th 1692 during what is now Polk County - making this an early Dutch settlement! Another early settler was Rufus King who arrived with his family from England about 1760 aboard HMS Swiftness which carried 300 settlers including 250 men plus women & children over wintering at Fort Myers – “our village” lasted until spring 1762 when Captn David Holmes forced them all ashore at Big Pine Key because he feared French power grew too strong there! That same year Captn Jonathan Putnam journeyed inland along Pensacola Bayou looking for new ground where he purchased 5 Acres of Creek Bottom Land on November 2nd 1763 just south of present day downtown Temple Terrice! With increased trading opportunities along Lake Pontchartrain due to Spain gaining possession of Cuba following America's War For Independence we quickly realized this rich bottomland would make great farmland! Xavier Broussard also moved here circa 1800 upon purchase of 640 acres east side Mobile River just south o Fulton Street – starting out as a cooper farmer but soon becoming one of Mobile’s leading planters himself owning 500 head Of cattle & 2400 hogs @ 15¢ per hog sold!! 3 churches: Bethesda Congregational Baptist Chapel next door Chapel Welsh Presbyterian Schoolhouse ½ mile downriver First Presbytery Lutheran Church which stood until 1840 when it was destroyed by pirates raiders led by Captain Richard Villegas who pillaged Stonington Ferryboat landingPassage House went into operationMayflower Merchant Marine Academy opened September 12th 1820coeducational state funded institution providing education for boys & girls age 7-18 Knewledge Male Female Seminaryopened January 6th 1827for girls only which later became State Normal School adjacent theretoState University Of West Palm Beachopened February 23rd 1912adjoining State University Of Tampabecoming Hillsborough Community College college park campus) After serving our Lord faithfully throughout those earliest days we engaged in agricultural pursuits such as raising cotton & corn; strawberries; convention flowers; fruit trees etc….. Numerous interesting families lived here thru all kinds Of weather changes Including: Plantation owners: Hawkins [Peter], Gadsden [Mary], Putnam [Jonathan]; Agricultural workers: Bowman/Ferguson/Latham/Ferguson; Commercial business people: Waddell/Bradshaw/Pitkin Family

TEMPLE TERRACE, FLORIDA HISTORY Temple Terrace was founded in 1892 by Dr. George Fenton and his wife, Emma. The town quickly became an important cultural and commercial center for the area. In 1912, Temple Terrace was renamed Gainesville after the University of Florida. From its inception, Temple Terrace was a racially segregated community with African Americans living in separate homes and businesses from white residents. However, this gradually changed over time as Temple Terrice began to attract more black residents who desired to live in a segregated but productive community. By 1960, there were no African American residents remaining in the town of 4500 residents when it was annexed by Gainesville. Today, Temple Terrice is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 12,569 people residing within its boundaries. The history of Temple Terrace begins with Doctor George Fenton who first settled in what is now known as Gainesville in 1892 after coming to Florida from England as part of a land speculation venture led by his brother-in-law John Witherspoon. The Landing Place had been established on the east side of Lake Okeechobee about two miles north of where modern day Gainesville stands today. At that time both towns were located on Seminole Creek which emptied into Lake Okeechobee at what is now called NW 30th Street NW.. In 1892 Doctor George Fenton and his wife Emma purchased 640 acres near present day NW 3rd Avenue NE andNW 27th Street SW., making them one of the first families to purchase land within present day Gainesville limits! When they opened their home at Landing Place they made use of slave labor to complete many tasks associated with house cleaning and other domestic duties around their home such as planting trees etc... It wasn't until 1915 when free blacks started moving into the town that it truly began's growth! This increase in black residency coincided with an overall increase in business activity around Gainesville due to new railroad lines being constructed nearby including ones that connected Jacksonville directly with Tampa Bay! As newly arriving black families brought their own foods, clothing and culture into contact with white people throughout southern Florida during this time period templeTerrace quickly became known as "the most integrated city ever built"! In 1924 Drs G Fenwick & Emmaw arrived bringing along their 6 childrensome still living at Landing Place while others moved out into larger homes on adjacent tracts prior to becoming professors at USF/Gainesville! That year landingPlace also saw its 2nd birthday serving up refreshments for local dignitaries & scout troops from all over south florida!!! During these years much progress was made towards integrating areas public schools thru integration measures like hiring black principals & teachers!!!!!! Butch Woods took office as POTUSin 1961 resulting in stricter enforcement against integrationist policies throughout south florida!!! After taking office he ordered police forces stationed throughout south florira aimed squarely at quelling any opposition towards efforts towards social determinations thru race!!!!!!!! This ended up leading directly to many lawsuits (& many deaths) !!
