In 1903, brothers George and Edwin Smith purchased a piece of land in Temple Terrace, Florida. They named the property "Temple Terrace" after the temple of Jerusalem they were familiar with from their travels in Europe. In 1910, they constructed the first scopes in Temple Terrace. The Smiths sold their scopes business to Bausch & Lomb in 1944. Over time, other companies have bought and sold ownership of scopes in Temple Terrice. Today, there are many businesses that sell telescopes in or around Temple Terrace. The Scopes Museum is located on the same property as the original Smiths' telescope company. The history of scopes can be traced back to 1854 when John Herschel designed and built one of the earliest telescopes for use by scientists at his Observatory at Greenwich Village on Long Island City (now part of New York City). By 1859, Herschel had replaced his earlier two-inch lens telescope with a three-inch model that he called "the Giant." The first settler in what is now Temple Terrace was Elisha Goodloe in 1836. A post office called Goodloe was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1881, the town took its name from Temple University which had just been founded nearby by Reverend John Denton. The school has since been moved to Philadelphia but still uses the name for their athletic teams. It lies on both banks of St Johns River; it forms a loop around downtown Jacksonville and parts of Southside are within its borders as well as portions of Holmes Beach and Walton Beach.. In 1912, Jock Wilkinson bought the farm from his father and renamed it "Temple Terrace", after the temple at Sycamore Hill in Philadelphia where he had been baptized as a child. The first post office was established at Temple Terrace on April 15, 1913; it was discontinued by December 31, 1914 because of World War I service requirements of all U.S., military personnel stationed in Florida then or since then (the country had entered wartime status on October 8, 1917). On July 4, 1916, during World War I veteran parades through Temple Terrace on Boulevard of Triumph Streets (now McEnery Place), local resident Toni Witherspoon offered free water to anyone who could give her an empty bottle; she collected bottles until there were only six left (). Temple Terrace was named for the temple of Jupiter in Rome. The first permanent settler on the site was a man by the name of David Walker, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin and started trading with Indians. In 1840, he sold his property to A.H. Smith, who erected a large frame house on it that remains today as one of Temple Terrace's most popular tourist attractions. In 1851, George Washington Hawkins purchased land adjacent to Temple Terrace from DavidWalker and began developing it into what is now known as Jacksonville Beach. In 1868, he donated land to Jacksonville State University which would become its main campus. By 1898, Jacksonville Beach had become an important seaport and had more than 25 thousand residents. In 1916, the city government renamed Temple Terrace after General John Jobe Frémont (1820-1898), an American general who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War
