Temple Terrace, Florida is an unincorporated community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Temple Terrace" comes from two places: one is a plantation near Temple Hills and the other is a tract of land that was given to Reverend John Temple by King James I for his religious instruction purposes. The original home of Congressman John Fenton (1811-1893) and his wife Lucy were located on what is now SW corner of Biscayne Boulevard and NW corner of Park Avenue in Temple Terrace. In 1892, the town had only 2 residents when it became property of Miami Beach Municipal District #5 with jurisdiction over all land east of Biscayne Boulevard within city limits. In 1916, Mayor Manuel Miranda established a public works office at SW Corner Park Avenue and SW corner Biscayne Boulevard as part of plans to improve infrastructure in response to World War I efforts to make America self-reliant. During World War I, Temple Terrice produced food for military troops stationed in Europe; during World War II they produced munitions for the war effort In 1961, when Temple Terrance became part of Polk County,[1] it had an estimated population of twenty-five hundred people[2]. Despite this growth potential, no new development took place until 1980 when construction began on what is now known as Broadwalk Place (formerly known as "Kirkwood Place"). The first public school in Temple Terrace was built in 1892. There were two schools, one for white children and one for black children. In 1949, the school board decided to combine the two schools into one. The new school was called Temple Terrace High School. In 1961, Temple Terrace became a city and the school board changed its name to City Schools of Temple Terrace. In 1977, City Schools merged with Central District School District #2 to form the present-day Miami-Dade County Public Schools system.
