In 1940, during World War II Japanese Resisters were interned at nearby Boca Raton Naval Air Station (now Palm Beach International Airport). Many of them were forced to work on the local plantations; some worked for many years without any pay or benefits. As a result, many trees on the island's main street were cut down during that time period as the military requisitioned more land for airfields and other purposes.

The first recorded mention of the community Temple Terrace was in 1778 when the French surveyor, François Marquette, noted a post at the junction of the Tallahassee and St. Johns Rivers. The name "Temple Terrace" likely derives from a Seminole word meaning "place where game is hunted." In 1819, James Dunnell, an American fur trader who made his home in what is now Polk County, purchased about 1/4 acre of land east of present-day Temple Terrace for $200. Dunnell named his new settlement after one of his friends and business associates - General Andrew Jackson's plantation on state road 12 in present-day Georgia - called Tamiami Trail. In 1827, Dunnell sold another tract adjoining his original property to John Thornton for $350. Thornton had been living near Jacksonville since 1793 when he arrived as an indentured servant with Captain William Treadway on HMS 'Nemo.' Thornton owned additional land east of today's Temple Terrace that he donated to the town in 1827. The town plat was filed with the Florida Land Office on July 8, 1830. On December 3, 1830, two years after its incorporation as a village under bylaws adopted November 16th 1830 by members of the First Presbyterian Church (later known as First Baptist), TempleTerrace received notice from Major John Fenton commanding 2nd Brigade Florida Militia that military duty would begin in January following Indian removal operations throughout Florida under United States Army Colonel Robert Ewell Thomas which were expected to take place within 10 days from Christmas Day 1830 Fenton wrote: "I am commissioned … to provide for you all necessary military equipment …" A committee was appointed to purchase arms and munitions at local stores and also ordered 500 lbs flour and 5 barrels pork butts . On January 6th 1830 residents met at the school house where they elected officers including Clerk Wm Hargrave Read who served until 1800; Sheriff Geo Mears; Constable Abel Dukes; Corporal Neely Blythehew; Dr Dennis Magoo…andfive men named Asahel Dunham Daniel Dunham David Dunham Augustus Dunham Nathan Dunham Rev Solomon Crouch Toombs Josiah Dearborn Ezekiel Dearborn John Dearborn Samuel Dixon Isaac Eaton Martin Eaton Election results are not extant but it is known that Abram Dukes (who later served as Mayor) was not among those elected. In early February 1832 "…about 3000 Creeks Indians having completed their Removal journey joined them there…" This represents perhaps one third or less of total number exposed to coldweather conditions during winter months according to Park Superintendent Jno Peebles diary entry dated February 15th 1832"…about 6000 natives remain thereon still waiting for their claims which will amount to some $6000 each" In order create roads leading out into open country towards Fort Meade these settlers began building fences along current day US1A & US1B Streets between Ellsworth Road & I-95 Corporate Center while others built private roads just outside city limits connecting various properties within city limits becoming known today as Lawn Drive (& beyond). With few exceptions most streets within city boundaries followed natural courses making access difficult if not impossible unless driving through downtown street grid layout currently used by police department vehicles unable turn onto residential streets traveling westbound on I-95 exit ramps leading northward reaching neighbourhoods located east & southeast corner Of Nowhere Rd.— so much so that development outlying areas have included creating ring roads encircling entire municipality including entering & exiting backyards— similar configuration used by Palm Beach County government today leaving little opportunity for ingress/egress except via major arterial routes
Temple Terrace was originally a Seminole Indian village. The first white person to live in the area was Captain John Smith, who established a cabin in 1763. In 1839, the United States Post Office moved from Fort Brooke to Temple Terrace and remained there until it was moved to Fort Myers in 1907. In 1970, the post office building and all of its contents were destroyed by fire.
