Temple Terrace was once a thriving community in central Florida. It was the location of several businesses and homes, including a Methodist church and a Masonic lodge. The area's rich history began with its earliest settlers, who arrived in the early 1800s. Some of these pioneers were Native Americans, who built an earthwork mound at the edge of town to worship their god, Wakanda. The first mention of Temple Terrace is from 1819, when Captain John Leary charted the route that would eventually connect Tampa and St. Petersburg. At that time, Temple Terrace was known as "Emmory". In 1830, Congressman Jameson Minto purchased land east of what is now Temple Terrace from Seminole Chief Manuel de Ayala for $1 million dollars. In 1835, five men established the first post office in central Florida - Temple Terrace - which served as the center for trade and communication between Tampa Bay and inland South Florida. The town grew rapidly during this time, becoming home to several churches and schools as well as businesses. By 1840, Temple Terrace had become one of Tampa's most important commercial districts. During World War II, many local citizens donated their homes and businesses to help support military efforts in Europe. The first people to live on the island of Temple Terrace were the Cinchon family. They came from Georgia in 1818. The next year, they built a cabin on the island. It was called the Cabin of Zeus. The Cinchons had two children, John and Sarah. In 1825, John married Sarah's sister, Rebecca Cinchon. The couple lived on the island until 1829 when they moved to St Johns County, Florida. They continued to live there until their death in 1892.
