The Temple Terrace community is a small, rural town in Polk County, Florida, located on the east side of the state. The population was 1,470 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lakeland-Winter Haven-Summit City micropolitan statistical area. The first people to live in what is now Temple Terrace were Methodists who started a mission there in 1856. The community was named after Edwin Murchison Temple, an American Baptist missionary and pastor who had been sent to Cuba as part of General Taylor's Expedition in 1855. The first Europeans to visit the area were Giovanni da Volterra and his brother Matteo in 1565. The English explorer, John Hawkins, landed on the island of Cuba in 1609 and named it Temple Terrace after a plantation he visited. In 1763, when Britain lost its Revolutionary War against George Washington, the property became part of Florida Territory. The territory was divided into two parts in 1821: Florida East Coast went to Georgia and WestFlorida went to Mississippi. In 1828, following Seminole Wars between the United States and Spain, large tracts of land along the coast were ceded to Florida by Mexico as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The name "Terrace" was given by Captain James Cook for a bluff overlooking the mouth of Turtle Creek on which he anchored his ship at Point Comfort during his exploration of Australia in 1770-71.
