When the first Seminole Indian warriors arrived in Florida, they built their homes on Temple Terrace. In 1818, white settlers began to arrive in what is now Polk County and build homes on the banks of the St. Johns River. The first house on Temple Terrace was built by Captain John Smith, who purchased land from the Seminoles in 1785. The house is still standing today and is used as a museum.
