Temple Terrace is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census. The town was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1892 as a small agricultural community near what is now Ybor City. The name "Temple Terrace" first appears on a map of Hillsborough County dated October 3, 1903. The original settlers were Methodists from North Carolina who had come to make a new life in this area after escaping religious persecution there. They built two churches and began farming the land around them. In 1911, when the state of Florida acquired all of Hillsborough County, Temple Terrace became one of its first townships. In 1918, the United States government sponsored a survey that found more than 12 square miles (25 km²) of land within present-day Temple Terrace would be suitable for citrus production if resources could be found nearby; this led to the development of what is now Citrus Heights Boulevard and other tracts adjacent to modern day South Pinellas Park Road east of Interstate 434 serving as citrus orchards until 1966 when most orchards were destroyed by Hurricane Dora which destroyed many homes and crops across central Florida including much of Tampa Bay Area leaving little fruit remaining on some acres centuries old! In 1926 local businessmen Harry Lahr & Clarence Wicks developed what would become Lighthouse Point Marina which served as an amusement park with ferris wheel attraction until 1976 when it closed due to erosion from high tides combined with changing public tastes especially since beachfront property has been opened up to development along Clearwater Beach making it difficult for residents who used their marinas for pleasure activities instead using Gulf Breeze Marina just offshore where access can now be had without taking boats into high tidal areas! Lighthouse Point Marina reopened as State Dunes Marina with increased fishing opportunities during low tide but then closed again due to budget cuts several years later leading eventually to foreclosure beginning late 2007/early 2008 followed by Isaacs's Viola Development Co., LLC taking over operations immediately prior to landfall on December 28th resulting in widespread flooding & environmental damage which continues today affecting properties adjoining State Dunes Marina including impacts from Irma which caused structural damage January 10th - 11th 2017 including loss or total demolition multiple berths on Paddlewheel Inn boat dock having been damaged during storm surge attempt January 17th failed effort w/o any warning prior occurred causing large waves effects even entering Dockhands Harbor Canoe launch ramp early morning January 19th creating dangerous conditions Access restricted Marinas still Open

The Temple Terrace Plantation was one of the largest plantations in Florida. It was located on the south side of Tampa Bay, about two miles from the present-day town of Temple Terrace. The plantation was founded by John Kirby Smith and his wife, Sarah. Kirby Smith was a wealthy planter who had acquired land near Hillsborough County in 1821. The Kirby Smiths were among the first white families to settle in Tampa Bay. They built a home on their plantation, which is now known as Kirbyville. The Kirby Smiths were among the first white families to send children to school in Tampa Bay. Their sons, George and John, became teachers at Hillsborough County Schools. George also served as headmaster of Stonington School District No. 1 from 1892 until his death in 1907. In 1865, John married Evalyn Merrick and they began farming around Cudahy Peninsula outside of Tampa City limits before moving to their present-day home on Temple Terrace Plantation about two years later in 1870. John and Evalyn's son James Keyes (1868-1946) became a prominent local businessman and civic leader during World War I and World War II He also served as manager of Pinellas County Agricultural Experiment Station during World War II EvalYN Keyes died in 1944; her husband James succeeded her In 1951, JamesKeyes sold his interest in the estate to Drury Service Company for $3 million Drury Service Company operated it until 1971 when it reverted back to its original owners
The first settlers in the area were a group of white men who called themselves the Creek Indians. They arrived in 1837, and founded a post on what is now Temple Terrace. The post was located on the banks of the St. Johns River, and it served as a trading center for the area. In 1849, some Seminole Indians attacked the post, and it soon became known as one of Florida's most deadly Battles. The Seminoles were led by Chief Osceola, and they killed many of the settlers before being eventually driven out of Florida by American forces in 1853. In 1865, Temple Terrace was renamed to honor General James Ewing after he helped lead Florida's successful campaign against Mexico during its Mexican-American War. In 1924, General Ewing was buried at Temple Terrace National Military Park.
