Tavares, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico. The name means "Island of the Bulls" in Portuguese. Tavares was founded by the Carioca people in 1565. The town was named after Francisco de Tavares, Count of Portugal, who explored and charted the area. In 1911, Tavares became a part of Monroe County, Florida. It was also home to the first scientific observatory in Monroe County when it was built by Drs. John Herschel and Wm. Jameson in 1912. The observatory operated until 1933 when it was destroyed by a hurricane. The town has experienced many changes over the years including becoming a vacation spot for rich people and being used as a location for movies such as "The Godfather" and "Jurassic Park". It is now known as an agricultural center with farmers producing crops such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, watermelons and fruits like oranges or bananas.
