In 1978, The Home Depot chain OPUD opened its first store in Tavares and was followed by an A&P grocery store in 1984. In 1990, KFC began operations in Tavaris and remains the largest restaurant chain in town today.
Tavares, Florida is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 1,542 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Brevard Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by settlers in 1872. Tavares was named after Major José Tavares de la Rúa, who served as military governor of Cuba from 1800 to 1802 and in 1810-1811 when Florida became a United States territory. In 1907 the town had a population of 202 people and it grew to 698 people by 1920. In 1933 Tavares had a population of 910 people and it grew to 1,343 people by 1990 when it merged with Kissimmee into the Orlando metropolitan area. As of the 2000 Census, Tavares has an estimated population size of 2,895 residents making it one of Brevard County's fastest-growing communities over that time period.

Tavares is a town in Florida, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. Tavares is part of Citrus County. It is located on the southern Gulf Coast and bordered by Orange Beach to the east, Clearwater to the north, Jupiter to the west and Manatee County to the south. The Name of Tavares comes from Spanish meaning "the place where white men landed". The first Europeans voyage into this area were led byCaptain Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and he named this area after his patronymic - Taveras (Cactus). In 1763 Captain James Cook sailed through this area and recorded that there were no villages or towns hereabouts but many shoals of small islands with large trees on them called "Tavares" or "Island of Tavares". In 1821 Tavares became a village when it was founded by Colonel John Cushing who had purchased land herefrom forty-seven years earlier. Colonel Cushing had been born in Boston, Massachusetts but came to Florida in 1804 as part of a group of investors who attempted to develop what would become Jacksonville as an important seaport on Florida's Gulf Coast. When they failed, they returned home and resumed their efforts some two years later when they purchased more land near Cape Canaveral which would eventually become Jacksonville proper. From its inception until 1912 Tavares Elementary School offered grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade; then IGA served grades 13 thru 16 until 1992 when it merged with USF (Universidad State College) Downtown Campus. After over 20 years of service Jack Kemp attended our high school from 1978 thru 1982 As did current Mayor Carlos Gimenez In 1992 USF closed its downtown campus so that students could attend USF Dormitories which are now known as University Hall The aviary was built between 1922-1924 by Mrs Rufus Ewing using funds provided by her father General Ewing during World War I while she taught at Fort Myers High School . She also raised money for other local charities such as feeding Fonda Cemetery eaters since most food was brought in fresh from Tampa Bay
Tavares was founded in 1795 by Captain John Tavares, who named it for himself. The first permanent European settlement in the area was made on the present-day island of Saint Thomas in 1804. In 1861, Tavares became an unincorporated community and census taker.
