Tavares, Florida is a town in Hernando County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,914 at the 2000 census. Tavares is located on the Apalachicola River and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Tavares was founded in 1821 by Captain John Tavares as an Indian trading post on what is now US-1. The post was originally named Fort Walton Beach because it stood near where modern day Tallahassee and St Augustine are located. In 1827, Tavares married Maria de la Concepcion y Valdez, sister of Governor Manuel de Valdez and he Government House still stands today as a museum dedicated to his memory. In 1828, Tavares laid out a town called "Tavares" on land that would eventually become most famous for its shopping mall built there in 1970 called The Mall of America. The first store opened there on October 14th of that year with $2 worth of goods. By 1840, the population had grown to 511 people living in just 20 homes! In 1861 when Confederate General Braxton Bragg invaded Florida and burned all but two days' worth of Charleston (West Ashley), General James Hardee led Confederate forces into Tavares to plunder it's stores before leaving without any damage or casualties after successfully taking control of West Ashley from the Unionists! Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith took command and decided that Tavares would be the new Headquarters for Confederate Military Affairs in Central Florida! The first African American to serve in the military in this area was Nathaniel Greene who served as a Corporal with Company A 2nd Seminole Battalion from December 1862 until February 1865 when he deserted due to illness at Camp Pickens outside Tampa Bay; he then rejoined his unit April 10th 1865 at Fort Brooke outside Havana Heights carrying dispatches from General Johnston himself! In 1880s local white men began moving away from their farms around here so development picked up again as truckloads of white people moved into town during prohibition which lead to increased crime rates however this ended about 1910 when alcohol prohibition started nationwide while many black men were brought over as workers under WFAA contracts

It experienced rapid growth during World War II because of its strategic location at one end of Key Biscayne Boulevard and its proximity to naval bases such as Fort Myers Naval Air Station and Homestead Air Force Base. The wartime boom ended soon after Pearl Harbor when America entered World War II without Japan andenemic arms plants like those at Tokyo or Hamburg being able to produce munitions for themself economically or militarily1 In recent years Tavares has seen significant revitalization due in part to its importance as an upscale community near Miami Beach while also providing opportunities for economic development through job creation within both local businesses as well as beyond2 . Tavares was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565. The town grew quickly and by 1675, Tavares had a population of over 1,200 people. Tavares is located on Tampa Bay and has a total area of 24 square miles. It is home to several historical sites, including the Stroud House Museums which are devoted to history and culture in the area around Tavares. The first European sighting of Tavares was made by Portuguese sailors in 1565 when they found land that looked like Cuba but was far from Havana. The name "Tavares" may have been derived from "taveira," meaning "bay." In 1763, after taking over Florida from Spain, the British Colony of Canada passed control of this territory back to Spain under terms that included giving up all land east of Cape Canaveral (that is now Pinellas County). This left small parcels for individual English settlers who were given carte blanche to develop their own towns or villages within these boundaries without any interference from either government officials or other settlers. The first American settler in what is now Tampa Bay was Nicholas de Montresor who arrived on July 4th, 1795 with his family as part of the brigantine USS Venture off Jupiter Island after sailing throughland from Nassau on Long Island Sound. Montresor landed at what is now Southside Avenue just south of Hillsborough Street where he built his initial homes until he migrated northward along Hillsborough Street into today's downtown area which he named "Montresor Square." De Montresor's settlement would become known as "Tampa" after him due to his influence upon early residents thereabouts such as Pierre-Antoine Le Moyne de Saint Agnes whose tavern stood at present day Fourth Street between Cypress Avenue and West Boulevard before being destroyed during the 1906 earthquake which destroyed much adjacent property including that now occupied by Sears Tower . Tensions between local English settlers (known locally as nabobie)and newcomers increased with frequent raids conducted against English dwellings by local Aboriginal peoples called yataganis or tawassusi (a word meaning both “ Raid” and “ Thieves”). By 1800 only about 50 persons lived in what became Tampa; most were tenant farmers who rented housing piecemeal from Nabobie landlords while farming crops near their homes around two miles wide plots bounded seaward on one side by Clearwater Bayou then bordered inland again 4 miles wide across Hillsborough Peninsula then ran parallel southwesterly along Polk Boulevard before terminating at Lake Worth Point currently occupied by Trump International Golf Club ..... Georges Pompidou Meigs added an additional acreage westward comprising today's Downtown core prior to French annexation following World War II .... Historical marker erected dedicated Nov 9th 1957

Tavares was founded in 1922 by John and Lillie Tavares. The Tavares family built the first house on the island, which they named "Olivia". The Tavares home is still standing and is currently used as a museum. Oceania Airlines (now Delta Air Lines) had their headquarters in Tavares from 1927 to 1986.
