Tavares, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,838 at the 2010 census. Tavares is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area. It is located on US 1 south of Turnpike 8 and east of I-95. The name Tavares comes from "Tavarez" an Indian word meaning "place where there was a tree." The first settler in Tavares was Elisha Pogue who arrived in 1824. A post office called Tavares was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. Having been founded by pioneers who were looking for land to settle after arriving from Russiaoff Island off Tampa Bay, Tavares quickly grew as a farming community with its own school and doctor. In 1886, the town added a church and other buildings when it became the county seat of Broward County; however, it reverted back to its original name upon becoming an unincorporated community on January 1st 1907. On December 6th 1944 during World War II Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor killing over 2,500 Americans including many residents of Tavares who were caught up in the attack as well as their families members living on nearby Islet Key which had been uninhabited for years due to damage done by Typhoon Jebi two days earlier

Tavares is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,711 at the 2010 census. Tavares is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Tavares was founded in 1892 by two brothers, James and John Tavares. The name comes from the Indian word "tahaw" meaning "place for fishing". In 1903, Tavares became a city after being chartered by the state of Florida. In 1907, Tavares annexed neighboring Key West. The annexation made Tavares a consolidated municipality with a population of 78 people. On July 1, 1912, Tavares incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name of Key West City; it had a population of only 10 people when it incorporation happened. On November 5th 1917 voters approved plans to make Tavarese their own municipal government and on December 12th 1917 they did so with a vote of 54% to 42%. The first post office opened at Tavares on March 3rd 1888 and served until October 6th 1909. It was moved to its current location at 202 SE 2nd Avenue in 1924 In 1896 James and John Tavarese established what would become one of South Florida's most successful fishing businesses - JT Fisheries Ltd.. Today this family-owned company still fishes from their original Keysite landing site which is located just north of town off SR 810 (the old alignment for US 1). For more than three decades JT Fisheries has been providing quality fresh seafood products to local restaurants all over South Florida! They offer charcuterie and sausage products as well as fresh catches from their fleet of boats that troll along the Keysite Lagoon each day looking for some great fish! James and John are also buried here beside their father – another member of this business dynasty who started it all back in 1896!
Tavares was founded in 1827 by Captain James Cook. The town was named for the Spanish captain, who sighted it on his way from Cuba to Florida in 1775. At its peak, Tavares had a population of about 1,500 people. It declined after the Civil War and also during the 1920s when sugar cane replaced sugar beets as the town's mainstay crop. Today, Tavares is a small fishing village with a population of about 125 people.
