Tavares, Florida was first settled in 1835 by the Tavares family. The town was named after Captain John Tavares and his family. The Tavares family ran a ferry service between St. Augustine and Tampa until 1955 when the company went bankrupt. In 1951, the Town of Tavares incorporation was made possible by an act of the Florida Legislature and it became an unincorporated community within the city of St Augustine with its own government. In 1972, the city annexed the town as part of its growth within St Augustine, making Tavares an inner-city neighborhood once again. Tavares is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Tavares is located on the mouth of the St. Johns River, about northwest of Jacksonville and south of Fort Walton Beach. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical area. The first blacks to live in Tavares were slaves who worked on a plantation owned by Captain John Auld in 1818. The town was named for José Tavares, one of the Africans working on the plantation. In 1821, Captain Auld allowed white men to buy land in Tavares and build homes; they called their new settlement "Tavares." The first black settler in Tavares was James Crawford; he bought land from Captain Auld and built a home there in 1824. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to boat traffic on the river. By 1830, TavARS had a store, schoolhouse, Baptist church (built 1826), post office (opened November 2, 1830), jail (opened February 9, 1830), two churches (one built 1827 and another built 1840), five homes (all built between 1830 and 1840), two wharves(s) or landing piers(s) for ships coming into or leaving the river's mouth(s), four blacksmith shops(s) established between 1830 and 1840 including one associated with local cotton plantations . Black people continued working as farmers until 1865 when they were all emancipated via acts of Congress known as Reconstruction Acts . In 1890 it became a county seat but it reverted back to its original name after Duval County was created from parts of Jacksonville County in 1907
Tavares was founded in 1838 by John Tavares, a Portugueseman who sailed to America on the "Queen of the West" and became one of the first white men to set foot in Florida. The land at Tavares was confiscated from Native American Indians by the Spanish in 1655 and then sold to English settlers. After he became governor of Florida, Tavares purchased additional land east of St. Augustine, which he donated to the State of Florida in 1827. He is also famous for his ship, "Teresa", which made it possible for Spain to provide food shipments to Cuba during the Cuban Revolution.
