Tavares, Florida is a small town located in St. Lucie County, Florida on the eastern coast of the state. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Lucie-Myakka-Boca Raton metropolitan area and is home to two universities: USF and Lakeland State University. The economy of Tavares is based largely on agriculture and fishing; there are also some small manufacturing businesses in the town. The first Europeans to visit Tavares were Spanish sailors who sailed into its waters in 1513 as part of their exploration of the area which lay between Cuba and Hispaniola (now Haiti). They named it Villa de las Palmas after one of their ships, though no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1835, while still a part of St. Lucie County, Tavares became an unincorporated community when its post office was founded by Jno Poynter under that name. In 1881 it became a Town when it annexed the neighboring communities of West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. In 1907, Tavares again became an unincorporated community when it merged with neighbouring communities Pompano Beach and Marathon Beach to form Boca Raton Municipal Borough. On 1 January 1959, as part of legal changes accompanying annexation by Boca Raton Township from Palm Beach County, Tavares became a full municipality with its own government and mayor elected at large rather than through partisan elections as had been previously adjacent communities such as West Palm Beach Municipal Borough and Marathon Beach Municipal Borough. On 1 January 1995, following South Florida's passage of Bill 723 which granted municipalities statewide authority to regulate traffic lights within their boundaries - including those within municipal boundaries but not incorporated into municipalities - Tavares received control over all traffic signals within its municipality boundaries thereby becoming "the only municipally controlled city in South Florida." Tavares is a town located in DeSoto County, Florida, United States. It has a population of 10,711 as of the 2010 census. Tavares was founded by Greek settlers in 1842 and it became part of the Union City school district in 1907. The first post office in Tavares was established in 1846. In 1925, Tavares incorporated as a city, and it received cityhood on November 2, 1926. The city's population growth slowed from its early years until the late 1990s when it experienced an increase due to immigration and economic development. The city has seen significant investment from businesses and developers over the years, including an original oil refinery that closed in 1984 but reopened as a hotel and casino; the construction of Interstate 495 (I-495) which connected Tavares to Daytona Beach; and other businesses that have arisen within its boundaries such as aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company (P&W), energy company Gulfstream Energy Corporation (GEC), telecommunications provider Comcast Spectacor Holdings Inc., water treatment plant MasterCreek Water Treatment Plant LLC., as well as several housing developments including: Dolphin Pointe Estates; Celebration Lakes; Timberland Townhomes; Port Royal Estates; Canton Cove Club House The history of Tavares began with Greek settlers who arrived here during 1842 after being driven out of their home country by Seminole Indians. These immigrants erected log cabins at what is now Main Street corner First Avenue for about two months before leaving for good on September 15th following clashes between Native Americans and their newcomers from Greece. For many years there were no schools or churches near this small community where only pioneer men could preach Christianity because there wasn't enough space for any larger buildings or even meeting halls inside the new arrivals' homes! Presbyterian missionaries built two small churches hereabouts before they were replaced by Baptists around 1870 CE while Methodists arrived just three decades later and constructed one church building which served both denominations until 1910 when it burned down due to natural disaster! Thereafter services were conducted at various outdoor locations until 1951 when pastor Jens Rasmussen started serving at All Saints Episcopal Church which still stands today - right next door to P&W Aerospace factory! In 1925, all of DeSoto County was annexed into Tampa Bay Area through General George Brown’s annexation plan whereby all counties east of Hillsborough River were added along with St Petersburg Township except unincorporated Pinellas County portions lying northward beyond mangrove swamp borders immediately south of Clearwater Harbor! Consequently, Tavares became part of Hillsborough Township within Tampa Bay Area – becoming America’s second largest municipality behind Chicago! As such its citizens enjoyed access to government services common to residents in neighboring municipalities – like streetlights being turned on during evening hours instead of turning off automatically when dark outside so residents would be able to find their way without “lurking” about!), public parks likeClearwater Harbor Wildlife Preserve bisected by Sunrise Boulevard/Hillsborough River (/ato/clearwaterharborwpg/); freezers available inside many business districts throughout downtown – much like our counterparts back home in Europe where these days we take advantage not only Of course some things didn’t change however such as people driving on sidewalks insteadof streets because that was considered “unsightly” back then!!! Tavares was an early European settlement on the Florida peninsula, founded in 1795 by John Tavares. It became a municipality in 1834. The town was named after John Tavares's ancestor, George Washington Thomson, who purchased land at the base of the present-day St. Johns River in what is now Flagler County.
