Tavares was founded by English colonists in 1839. The town was named after Captain John Tavares who explored the area and discovered the mouth of the St Johns River in what is now Jacaranda Beach on November 14, 1839. The first post office in Tavares opened in 1840. In 1851, Tavares became an incorporated village and developed into a small community with a school, grocery store, and blacksmith shop. In 1865, Tavares became a county seat when it merged with St Johns County to form Duval County. In 1886, Tavares annexed to Sumterville which had been founded by white settlers as a cotton plantation near where present-day Sumterville sits on its edge on the riverbank. The annexation made Tavares one of only two towns ever annexed by Jacksonville without being given city status;the other being Neptune Beach which joined Jacksonville in 1957 (becoming one of Duval County's five cities). In 1916., during World War I service members from both Towns volunteered for active duty together at Camp Cobbler located along US 27 about 4 miles east of central Tavares and became known as "The 2nd Infantry" or simply "The 2IS". While their unit did combat actions againstenemy forces they also enjoyed picnics at Centre Park located adjacent to Camp Cobbler before departing for home Dec 21 1915 After WWI many residents left for better jobs across America or returned home but most kept their homes until 1946 when they were sold to developers who turned them into apartments/condos/townhomes today
