Tavares is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. Tavares is located on the Atlantic coast of Florida about 30 miles (48 km) south-southwest of Fort Lauderdale and about 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of Miami. It is bordered by Lake Worth to the east, Boca Raton to the west and Lakeland to the northwest. The area now called Tavares was first settled by Africans in 1794 as part of what would become Palm Beach County. At that time it was known as "Natchez." In 1821 Englishman John Stroud bought 2,000 acres (880 hectares) of land here from local chief Wacquanto for $2,000. named it Tavares after his friend and neighbor Sir James Macdonald who had also purchased property nearby in 1820. The name stuck and today's community owes its start to Stroud's purchase as well as numerous other donations over time including one from Pershing Square developer Morris Kravis which doubled its size when he donated land adjacent to his shopping center in 1950. In 1855 Oviedo moved his cotton plantation here from Alabama and began growing sugarcane for shipment out of Cuba via Key West. By 1870 more than 50% of all palm oil produced in Florida came from Tavares - an industry that continued until World War II when production dwindled because of wartime shortages caused by rationing policies in Europe . After the war there were few new plantations built because OFA restrictions made it difficult to compete with those near Manila . Today much self-reliance exists with a small number of farmers still producing important crops such as fruit trees, vegetables and milk products though some light manufacturing has been revived including a few garment manufacturers employing several hundred people statewide

Tavares, Florida is a small town in southern Florida that was once the largest black population center in the United States. The town was founded by African Americans who fled to the area during the Great Migration of 1915-1920. Tavares is located on Gulf Breeze Boulevard, just east of Jacksonville and west of St Petersburg. As of 2010, Tavares had a population of 255 people. The town's history dates back more than 100 years and began with African Americans who were fleeing Jim Crow America. The first Africans to arrive in Tavares were brought over as slaves by three men from Africa: John Sledge, Solomon Northup, and James Weldon Johnson. They built a plantation near what is now downtown Tavares and named it after their captain, Moses Eaton (cpanicotus). It operated until 1833 when Eaton sold it to Captain John Gardner for $847 dollars. In 1838, Gardner moved his family to what is now Jacksonville but continued to maintain a presence in Tavares as an owner/operator of several plantations including White Sands Plantation adjacent to present day St Petersburg Beach Boulevard; Key Largo Plantation across from Jacksonville Landing on US 1; and Indianola Plantation further upriver on US 27. In 1865-1866 two white men from Georgia came into the area looking for land rights worth $10 million dollars so they could create their own cotton plantations north of Tampa Bay but they never reached Tavares because they only managed about 5% of all the new cotton plantations coming into existence at that time within thirty miles of Tampa Bay. On December 20th 1865 one thousand five hundred blacks left Savannah with oxen and wagons headed for Fernandina Beach where they would be taken aboard ships bound for Louisiana where they would be sold off into slavery or sent back home through shipwrecks like the "Darlington" which sank offshore on April 15th 1865 carrying over 400 Blacks including many women and children without any survivors ever being found (remarkably enough only eleven bodies have ever been recovered since then). When news spread about this disaster some unusual people started coming out ontoshore to try and salvaged any pieces alive which included Edwin Bryant an American seaman who became known as “Black Jack” due to his successful salvage efforts(Bryant has since died). On July 26th 1868 another vessel called HMS "Elvira" hit rock bottom while sailing between Havana Cuba & Key West Fla., killing all 146 passengers & crew onboard along with 68 Negroes disembarking trying unsuccessfully to swim ashore before being drowned (this event remains one of history's most notorious maritime disasters). This tragedy caused great outrage throughout America culminating in President Andrew Johnson ordering federal troops landed at Fort Pierce harbor making sure these whites didn't take away basic human rights enjoyed by all citizens regardless race or color.) This particular event motivated African American entrepreneurs such as Marcus Garvey Sr., Elijah Muhammad Jr., Fenton Crenshaw (founder/president emeritus Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee)and others throughout history who believed that together we could achieve social change no matter how difficult it may seem initially. After Ft Pierce was captured by Confederate forces on May 14th 1865African American soldiers under General Pemberton surrendered instead allowing Union forces under General Sherman access back into Florida allowing large numbers of freed slaves freedom again giving rise to things like Job Corps programs providing economic opportunity for those who had lost their jobs during Reconstruction era. Many families return every year during Christmas holiday season Parade down Main Street celebrating local businesses such as First National Bank, Mrs G's Bakery, caterers Mardi Gras Fiesta Catering services etc that serve delicious food made fresh daily right outside our door!
Tavares, Florida was founded on December 12, 1868 by John Tavares and his wife Anna. The Tavares family ran a cattle ranch in the area until 1899. In 1901, the Tavares brothers purchased a small island in Lake Monroe from the Indian tribe of Seminole. They named their new island after Anna's father, John Fortunato Tavares. From 1911 to 1916, the Tavares brothers were owners and operators of the St. Augustine Light Railway across Lake Monroe from their island to St. Augustine, FL. In 1916, they sold their interests in the light railway and moved south to Tampa Bay where they built a plantation called "The Oaks". The Tavarezes remained owners of The Oaks until its sale in 1927 to citrus grower Jules Dayenne.
