Tavares is a small town in Franklin County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. Tavares is part of the Gainesville-Bradenton-Lakeland metropolitan area. The first settlers in Tavares were Baptists from North Carolina who came there in 1836. They built a chapel and began worshiping God there in 1840. The first post office was established here in 1852, and it remained active until 1959. In 1924, Tavares became an incorporated town under the name of Lakeland; it changed its name again to Tavares in 1951 when it became a county seat of Franklin County. Tavares was founded in 1836 by brothers John and Nicholas Tavares. The Tavares family built a wharf on the St. Johns River, which they named after their father, Nicholas Tavares. In 1840, they developed a cotton plantation near what is now Jacksonville. The Tavares family prospered until the early 1800s when their plantations were destroyed by disease and Native American attack. They resettled in what is now Sarasota County, Florida in 1839 and continued to grow crops and build wharves before settling down as farmers.
