The first Europeans to visit Tavares were the Spanish conquistadors in 1513. They named it Isla de la Cruz because they found a black rock on the island. He named it Nouvelle Espagne after Spain's King Charles III who had founded Havana in 1665 and was then ruling over all Cuba and Hispaniola; this was also the first time that such a distinction had been made between Tampa Bay and Cuban ports. When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1821, Congress designated Tavares as part of what would become known as Flagstaff Township until 1829 when it became part of Miami Township due to its location on land grants given by Captain James Kenedy to Colonel John Cline during his military campaigns against Seminole Indians near Key Largo on Longboat Key Peninsula. On July 26, 1893, President Grover Cleveland signed Executive Order No. 153 which created the City of Miami with its own Mayor and City Councils withinMiami Township boundaries without having to go through township approval process like other municipalities in Miami County at that time. In 1901, residents voted to change their name from Flagstaff Township to Tavares after Supervisor Jens Ludwigson obtained a resolution from then Mayor Antonio Mirabal asking for input on possible names for an adjacent community if Everglades National Park was ever established east of where US 1 crossed I-95 just south of mainland Tampa Bay; Tavares Island came about as a result because there were no available local Names that matched approving Supervisor Mirabal's request (the only other option being "Island" which did not receive much votes). Tavares experienced significant growth during World War II as many workers assembled munitions plants around the region for production abroad; those plants left behind large amounts of pollution which continues To this day affecting water levels along many streets bordering The Harbor District including most notably Second Avenue north near Starbuck's where PCBs were produced early into WWII until treatment began mandated by law some years later! Some notable natives who have lived here since include Rear Admiral Vernon Walters* who served USS Enterprise under Commander William Froschauer throughout World War II before retiring in 1971; Congressman Don Beyer* son *of North Carolina Senator Harry Reid* graduated from Stetson University & currently represents Delaware’s 7th congressional district; Symphony Orchestra bassist Leonard Slatkin *who played with Philadelphia Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini* lives & teaches music composition at Pinecrest High School where he has been Superintendent since 2001

In 1922, TavaresPOST office closed its doors after 25 years due to lack of demand from customers and competition from other towns in the area. -In 1928, Tavares POST Office reopened with a new building that still stands today -In 1929, Tavares became part of St Johns County -In 1930, Tavares became an independent city -In 1951, Tavarese fluoridation ordinance passed which made it illegal for anyone but citizens to drink water without getting a permit -On October 3rd 1957 (the day after Hurricane Andrew hit), Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of what remained of town including much property that still stands today
